Christopher Lloyd revisits a huge part of his past in the new discovery+ series<\/a> \u201cExpedition: Back to the Future,\u201d hosted by Josh Gates.<\/p>\n

The four-part series, premiering Monday, March 15, follows Gates and Lloyd \u2014 who played befuddled genius inventor Doc Brown in \u201cBack to the Future\u201d opposite Michael J. Fox\u2019s teenaged Marty McFly \u2014 as they search for the futuristic time-travel<\/a>ing DeLorean cars (there were seven in all) used in the iconic movie trilogy. <\/p>\n

The original 1981 DeLorean Automatic will be auctioned on Charibybuzz.com starting March 15 to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson\u2019s Research. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s disease in 1991 when he was 29 years old (he also app<\/a>ears in the series). <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been able to maintain a friendship, so it\u2019s great,\u201d Lloyd, 82, told The Post. \u201cHe has a poker game<\/a> event that raises funds for his charity and I\u2019ve participated in that a couple of times, and a few other instances [in] raising money for his charity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love Michael and I see him pretty often,\u201d Lloyd said. \u201cHe is so durable and gracious and has such a wonderful sense of humor and perspective about all of that. I\u2019m very happy to be able to contribute.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the series opens, Lloyd and Gates, the longtime host of Discovery\u2019s \u201cInvestigation Unknown,\u201d embark on a mission to locate all seven DeLoreans from the \u201cBack to the Future\u201d trilogy. \u201cI haven\u2019t done anything to keep track of them \u2014 where they are, what condition they\u2019re in \u2014 so that was the adventure of doing this show,\u201d Lloyd said. \u201cWe went to where we could find hose original seven cars\u2026and found out the history of each one.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s one place that\u2019s on a farm in Western Massachusetts [Hubbardstown] where the farm\u2019s owner and his family have made it their passion to collect memorabilia from the films and it\u2019s an incredible collection.\u201d<\/p>\n

The episodes are part meta \u2014 Lloyd plays himself and Doc Brown \u2014 and part comic travelogue, as he and the enthusiastic Gates traverse the country (including stops in Orlando, Beverly Hills and Houston) on their mission while visiting collectors, and museums, dedicated to preserving the movies\u2019 legacy. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing about Chris is that even though he\u2019s not at all manic like Doc, he just IS <\/em>Doc,\u201d Gates said over e-mail. \u201cYou see him and hear his voice, and it\u2019s impossible not to feel like you\u2019re standing next to Emmett Brown. So every day, I\u2019d look over and think, \u2018Whoa, this is heavy.\u2019 He deserves an award for putting up with my fanboying.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo work alongside Chris on an expedition to benefit Michael J. Fox\u2019s foundation? It\u00a0doesn\u2019t get any better than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lloyd even wears Doc Brown\u2019s colorful shirt from the original flick. \u201cThat was the only [item of clothing] I kept from the movie,\u201d he said. \u201cI can\u2019t say that I wear it often because it brings a lot of attention to my wife [Lisa] and I, so we kind of skirt that. But it\u2019s hanging in my closet and I see it everyday.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also gets the chance to sit behind the wheel of the DeLorean used in the original 1985 movie. \u201cThat place doesn\u2019t exist anymore but in that car,\u201d he said. \u201cThe DeLorean was such a good choice. It looked spacey and futuristic. Over the years so many people have come up to me and expressed how \u2018Back to the Future\u2019 made their childhood \u2014 especially people from impoverished areas who said they were inspired by the film to become doctors, physicists, etc. And I\u2019m so grateful for that.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople love love stories about being a mentor to a young person, and Doc Brown is a mentor to Michael [as McFly]. People are fascinated by that connection, this guy who makes clocks and has this strange car\u2026I know, in my own life, there were people when I was growing up who seemed to be plugged into this extraordinary, unique reality that fascinated me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack to the Future\u2019 has that power \u2014 and that\u2019s what makes it so compelling to me.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
