There\u2019s a new scientific twist on marital bliss.<\/p>\n

A variation in DNA could determine a person\u2019s ability to experience high levels of gratitude, trust and satisfaction during the first few years of a marriage, a recent study suggests.<\/a> <\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the wedding, most people hope to remain satisfied in their marriage forever,\u201d the study\u2019s lead author and University of Arkansas psychology professor Anastasia Makhanova told The Post. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut maintaining a high level of satisfaction in a relationship for an extended amount of time is difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

A decrease in marital satisfaction over time is common in most relationships, veteran couple\u2019s therapist Rachel Sussman told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Financial issues, changes to the family dynamic and even stresses stemming from the current pandemic can all contribute to lower marital satisfaction, according to Sussman.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, as Makhanova\u2019s study found: \u201cSome people might have a genetic predisposition to intuitively feel more grateful for their partner, be more trusting of their partner and enjoy more long-term satisfaction in their marriage than others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her research team analyzed 142 newlyweds, or 71 couples, during the first three years of marriage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They found that individuals with a \u201cCC variation\u201d to the CD38 gene \u2014 which has been linked to positive behaviors and perceptions in romantic relationships \u2014 enjoyed higher levels of marital satisfaction than men and women with an \u201cAC\u201d or \u201cAA\u201d variation of the gene.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In this study, the \u201cA\u201d and the \u201cC\u201d represented the different alleles that determined the variant forms of the CD38 gene.<\/p>\n

At the start of the study, researchers collected DNA samples from each newlywed within three months of their wedding day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The couples also completed in-depth questionnaires that assessed their thoughts on relationship satisfaction with their new husband or wife.<\/p>\n

Participants then agreed to complete a series<\/a> of extensive surveys every four months for the next three years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter three years, everyone reported being less happy in their marriage than they were right after their weddings,\u201d Makhanova said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut even over time, the people with the CC genotype reported higher levels of gratitude, trust, forgiveness and overall marriage satisfaction than others with the AC or AA genotypes.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the study, newlyweds with the CC variation reported greater relationship satisfaction than others because they felt more trusting of their partner.<\/p>\n

\u201cGratitude creates an environment of appreciation in a marriage, and appreciation creates trust,\u201d relationship expert Susan Winter told The Post.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s the master formula for marital satisfaction.\u201d<\/p>\n

While there\u2019s no way to identify the CC variant of the CD38 gene outside of testing a person\u2019s DNA in a lab, Winter suggests observing a potential partner\u2019s willingness to express gratitude, trust and forgiveness with others to determine if they\u2019ll be able to do the same in marriage. <\/p>\n

And although Makhanova\u2019s study links the CC variant with marital satisfaction, she notes that of course, people with the AC or AA variations can still enjoy successful and healthy relationships.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no reason to think that someone with an AC or AA genotype is doomed to have an unsuccessful marriage,\u201d Makhanova said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThose people just might have to work a little more consciously to show their partner gratitude, forgiveness and trust in order to achieve and sustain marital satisfaction.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
