The downfall of Bon App\u00e9tit amid accusations of racial discrimination is being turned into a comedy. <\/p>\n

The widely publicized implosion of the long-running food and lifestyle magazine is the subject of a new HBO show, according to the Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. The scandal is set to get the \u201cInsecure\u201d treatment with the help of that show\u2019s head writer Amy Aniobi who will lead the new series<\/a>, called \u201cEnjoy Your Meal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The forthcoming series will \u201cdraw inspiration from the multiple media<\/a> scandals of summer 2020 and today, focusing on a cohort of young assistants of color who rise up to tear their cookie-cutter corporate culture apart,\u201d according to the series\u2019 summary.<\/p>\n

Aniobi will also executive produce alongside Galt Niederhoffer and Monica Villarreal (\u201cThe Kids Are All Right\u201d) of Authentic Management Productions and record producer Drew Dixon (\u201cOn the Record\u201d). They\u2019ve also tapped insider Ryan Walker-Hartshorn \u2014 who was assistant to Bon App\u00e9tit\u2019s then-Editor-in-Chief Adam Rapoport<\/a> and the sole black staffer at the time \u2014 to consult on the script. <\/p>\n

Controversy among the magazine\u2019s staffers initially surfaced last summer, when an image of Rapoport costumed in \u201cbrownface\u201d was unearthed and shared across social media. The incident, resulting in Rapoport\u2019s resignation, also became a catalyst for open discussion of the company\u2019s problematic culture and lack of diversity, with one of their editors of color, Sohla El-Waylly, later admitting that she had previously been used \u201cas a display of diversity\u201d in their \u201cTest Kitchen\u201d video series. Soon, El-Waylly, and several others in solidarity, left the company after failed negotiations for a more equitable salary. <\/p>\n

After leaving the company in August, Walker-Hartshorn alleged that Rapoport treated her like \u201cthe help,\u201d having worked full-time for three years at a salary of $35,300, according to an interview with Business Insider<\/a> \u2014 a rate considered below a \u201cliving wage\u201d for single, childless residents of New York City, where the magazine is based. While under his charge, Walker-Hartshorn was said to have cleaned Rapoport\u2019s gold clubs and instructed his wife on using Google Calendar. <\/p>\n

The magazine\u2019s parent company Cond\u00e9 Nast selected Dawn Davis, former vice president and publisher of Simon & Schuster\u2019s 37 Ink \u2014 an imprint that focuses on voices of color \u2014 to replace Rapoport and lead Bon App\u00e9tit\u2019s reinvention.<\/p>\n

A premiere date for \u201cEnjoy Your Meal\u201d has yet to be announced.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
