Times Square looked like its bustling old self on Friday.<\/p>\n

After a full year of New York musicals and plays being dark, Broadway artists commemorated the occasion by putting on a starry surprise concert for a small-but-mighty crowd in the middle of the Theater District.<\/p>\n

Its defiant message for an industry that has been pummeled by the COVID-19 pandemic was made clear by the event\u2019s title:\u00a0\u201cWe Will Be Back.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a time to reflect on what we\u2019ve lost and who we\u2019ve lost over the past year, and recall how far we\u2019ve come,\u201d Tom Harris, acting president of the Times Square Alliance, told The Post. \u201cJust think \u2014 a couple of short months ago, we had 35,000 people walking through Times Square [a day]. Now, we have 100,000.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many Broadway stars were on hand for the uplifting show, including Matthew Broderick and Brian Stokes Mitchell.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t tell you how novel and wonderful and great it is to see so many friends and colleagues in three dimensions!\u201d said Tony Award-winning Mitchell as he introduced the first performance, \u201cOn Broadway.\u201d<\/p>\n

The half-hour program featured three additional songs \u2014 \u201cHome\u201d from \u201cThe Wiz,\u201d \u201cMagic To Do\u201d from \u201cPippin\u201d and an original tune called \u201cWe Will Be Back\u201d by Allen Ren\u00e9 Louis \u2014 sung by the likes of Andr\u00e9 De Shields, Lillias White, Derrick Baskin and Nikki M. James, and backed by spirited dancers. All wore masks or face shields.<\/p>\n

Friday wasn\u2019t the first time Broadway has gathered in Times Square to show strength during hard times. Tony Award-winning director Jerry Mitchell was reminded of the iconic Broadway commercial <\/a>he choreographed after the Sept. 11 attacks, when stars such as Nathan Lane, Elaine Stritch and Bernadette Peters sang on that very spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last time I remember this [type of] event was 9\/11, when we did \u2018New York, New York,\u2019 \u201d Mitchell told The Post. \u201cAnd seeing the community come together \u2014 it\u2019s a little different this time because we\u2019re all wearing double masks \u2014 but it certainly is hopeful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Broadway began the longest closure in its history on March 12, 2020, when Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a ban on events of greater than 500 people. The hiatus was supposed to last one month. Now, the latest best-case-scenario timing for full-capacity performances to resume is early fall.<\/p>\n

Actor Joel Grey told The Post that being back in a temporarily busy Midtown was a shock, \u201cbut you gotta take baby steps.\u201d The 88-year-old actor, clad in a \u201cWillkommen\u201d mask given to him by the assistant choreographer of his off-Broadway \u201cFiddler on the Roof,\u201d said he was recently vaccinated.<\/p>\n

At the end, an effervescent Chita Rivera took the stage to voice her support, and get a few laughs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI began my career in the theater over 70 years ago,\u201d Rivera, 88, told the crowd. \u201cAnd I know what you\u2019re all thinking: I don\u2019t look a day over 60!\u201d <\/p>\n
