\n Joe Harris is an unrestricted free agent with no player option. For the Nets forward, taking part in the NBA restart is walking a tightrope toward the biggest payday of his career without a safety net.<\/p>\n

Contracting COVID-19 or any major injury during the NBA\u2019s restart could jeopardize that contract. But that jeopardy won\u2019t give him a second thought about going to Orlando. If he\u2019s cleared, he\u2019s competing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s obviously stuff that you have to think about and discuss. But at the end of the day, it wasn\u2019t like it was a difficult decision for me. I\u2019m healthy. I\u2019m going to play and finish out the season,\u201d Harris said on a Thursday Zoom call.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s obviously a different circumstance given everything that\u2019s going on and the time off that we\u2019ve had. But the way that I look at it is like, \u2018All right, we have eight game<\/a>s left. This is the equivalent of Game 74 in the regular season.\u2019 I wouldn\u2019t take the last eight games off of the season just to get ready for free agency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even with the pandemic suppressing the market, Harris\u2019 next contract is expected to far eclipse the two-year, $16 million deal he\u2019s finishing up. Washington\u2019s Davis Bertans \u2014 another free-agent deadeye shooter \u2014 opted out of the restart over similar concerns. But despite discussions with agent Mark Bartelstein, Harris never considered going that route.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, for me, my situation was pretty simple,\u201d Harris said. \u201cObviously you talk with your agent about it a little, but at the end of the day I didn\u2019t really even think twice about it, so it wasn\u2019t like I was really having discussions a lot. As long as I was healthy and feeling comfortable with the situation I\u2019m going to go down and play.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Florida setting a COVID-19 mark with 10,100 new infections Thursday, there is reason for concern. But the worst part of the pandemic for Harris came at the start of the outbreak, for familial reasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom [Alice] had been staying with me because she was diagnosed with cancer earlier in November, so she was doing a lot of her treatments here with Weill Cornell,\u201d said Harris. \u201cI was obviously worried to be around her when we\u2019d initially come back from California just given the uncertainties around corona and how it affects people with compromised immune systems.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, that would definitely be the worst period. Thankfully she is doing well from a health standpoint right now, but that was my biggest concern, and the worst period for me was just having to worry about all that initially.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris is also thankful he stayed in Brooklyn throughout, with the COVID-19 cases falling sharply after April\u2019s peak. A month later, Barclays Center became the epicenter for Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s killing.<\/p>\n

Since then, Harris has found himself engaging as a white ally on a diverse team. He discussed just that with Garrett Temple, both in private and on the Nets\u2019 website multiple times in the past two weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust being around somebody like Garrett where he\u2019s just such a good communicator in general<\/a> \u2014 but especially in regards to a lot of these social<\/a> issues \u2014 he has a strong stance with how he feels,\u201d Harris said. \u201cHe\u2019s going to take the time to educate someone like myself that will never obviously be able to understand, but is wanting to educate and learn and trying to be better.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust the fact that we\u2019ve had a lot of different discussions, you put yourself in vulnerable uncomfortable positions where we\u2019re having these sort of similar discussions that we have in the locker room on an Instagram Live platform, just doing different things where we hope we can influence people and enact some sort of change and help create a level of education and understanding for different groups of people.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
