New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday refused to take responsibility for not shutting down the city earlier at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic \u2014 blaming embattled Gov. Andrew Cuomo for being the slow one.<\/p>\n

When pressed on why it took two weeks after the city\u2019s first COVID-19 case to issue lockdowns, de Blasio insisted that he<\/em> was actually ahead of the curve.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was one of the first in America to shut schools, one of the first in America to shut bars and restaurants and I called for shelter in place. Unfortunately, my state government wouldn\u2019t agree to it,\u201d the mayor told CBS anchor Margaret Brennan on \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Brennan asked him why he didn\u2019t see the \u201cwriting on the wall\u201d as cases were exploding overseas \u2014 noting that San Francisco\u2019s Mayor London Breed ordered a state of emergency on Feb. 26 without a single confirmed case there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were trying to make sure that we are working on the best health evidence while also protecting our children who need to be in school,\u201d de Blasio said.<\/p>\n

When asked about estimates that he could have saved between 50 to 80 percent more lives if he acted a week earlier, de Blasio insisted that was \u201cjust not accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact is the thing that would have been a great thing, the thing that would have been powerful would have been shelter in place,\u201d de Blasio said, insisting that was the true \u201cmissed opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I called for it, Gov. Cuomo wouldn\u2019t do it. He said it would be quote-unquote imprisoning New Yorkers. I mean that\u2019s just outrageous.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
