“#NYC holds COVID-19 memorial one year after first virus death<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

New York City honored the 30,000 residents who died of coronavirus in a remembrance ceremony Sunday night that featured faces of the pandemic\u2019s victims projected in light on the Brooklyn Bridge.<\/p>\n

The virtual memorial, called, \u201cA COVID-19 Day of Remembrance,\u201d was held on the one-year anniversary of the city\u2019s first known coronavirus death.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery morning, the first thing I see is a list,\u201d Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the ceremony. \u201cAnd there are numbers on it. But what it really means, is how many people we lost.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday that number is more than 30,000. It\u2019s a number we can barely imagine,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n

But, de Blasio said, the memory of those lost will carry on forever.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery single one of them. Everyone we\u2019ve lost \u2014 what they did goes on. What they contributed, what they created, the love they gave goes on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

As of Sunday afternoon, 30,258 people in the Big App<\/a>le have died from the virus, according to city data. <\/p>\n

Among the victims was a Harlem grandfather named Francisco Juarez-Garcia.<\/p>\n

Juarez-Garcia\u2019s daughter, Carolina Juarez Hernandez, recalled during Sunday\u2019s memorial the heartbreaking moment she last saw her father before he died at the hospital.<\/p>\n

She and her mother had just tested negative for the virus, but her father remained ill and was admitted to hospital\u2019s coronavirus wing, which barred visitors.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen security stopped me, I didn\u2019t think to hug him goodbye,\u201d said an emotional Carolina.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to keep his spirit up. So I just said, \u2018I\u2019ll talk to you later.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo this day, I regret not giving him that hug. Because I never got to see him in person again,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The first known COVID-19 fatality in the city \u2014 also considered the first in the state \u2014 was that of an 82-year-old woman who died at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
