Libertarian: Congress\u2019 Attack on Workers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Californians backed a ballot initiative vetoing parts of a law that forced companies to hire freelancers as employees, yet Democrats in Congress are now trying to force those same rules \u201cdown the entire country\u2019s throat,\u201d\u00a0frets Reason\u2019s Scott Shackford<\/a>. The Protecting the Right to Organize Act is based on California\u2019s ABC rule, which limits the number of workers who may qualify as \u201cindependent contractors.\u201d The rule ended up costing \u201cthousands upon thousands\u201d of California freelancers \u2014 those it was supposed to help \u2014 their jobs. The bill would also undermine\u00a0states\u2019 right-to-work laws, which let employees skip joining and paying dues to unions \u201cif they don\u2019t want to be represented by them.\u201d There\u2019s no good argument for that.<\/p>\n

Conservative: Aztec Religion in the Classroom<\/strong><\/p>\n

California\u2019s Department of Education is considering \u201ca new statewide ethnic studies curriculum that advocates for the \u2018decolonization\u2019 of American society and elevates Aztec religious symbolism,\u201d\u00a0warns Christopher F. Rufo at City Journal<\/a>. Lessons \u201crecast the United States as an oppressor nation that must be deconstructed and subverted through politics\u201d and include chants to the Aztec god of human sacrifice that are \u201calmost certainly a violation of the First Amendment\u2019s Establishment Clause.\u201d The best hope for opponents of these \u201cequity\u201d activists is to \u201cstrike out some of the more galling material\u201d and \u201cdevise a long-term strategy to push back against the public education establishment.\u201d Yet, for now, \u201cthe activists app<\/a>ear to be driving the narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: The Left\u2019s Free-Speech Deniers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Too many on the left are calling \u201cthe free-speech crisis in universities\u201d a \u201cright-wing myth,\u201d\u00a0observes Frank Furedi at Spiked<\/a>. They dismiss \u201ccountless examples of censorship as overhyped,\u201d ignore \u201cconcerns about the moral policing of dissenting views\u201d and attack those \u201csounding the alarm.\u201d This \u201cdenialism coexists with the conviction that some voices are not worth hearing and others should be shut down because they are dangerous and hateful,\u201d categories that have \u201cexpanded hugely.\u201d The denialists \u201care committed to a very thin and limited definition of free speech,\u201d and \u201cmany are now becoming self-conscious critics\u201d of its value. But then: \u201cIs it any surprise that those who associate free speech with oppression are at a loss to understand why policing it should be characterized as a crisis?\u201d<\/p>\n

Climate-change watch: A Push for Permanent Lockdowns<\/strong><\/p>\n

For climate warriors, the pandemic offers \u201ca grand opportunity to enact permanent lockdowns,\u201d\u00a0sighs Joel Kotkin at Real Clear Energy.<\/a>\u00a0After all, by \u201ckilling much of the economy,\u201d the crisis temporarily cut greenhouse-gas emissions 7 percent worldwide. Many even back \u201ceconomic \u2018de-growth\u2019\u201d \u2014 which suggests a \u201cbleak\u201d future for employees. Yet since few ordinary people see climate as a top issue, \u201ca permanent lockdown would need to be imposed\u201d from above. Indeed,\u00a0zealots like former California Gov. Jerry Brown and\u00a0billionaire Michael Bloomberg\u00a0praise \u201cChina\u2019s autocratic approach\u201d; Brown \u201copenly favors applying \u2018the coercive power of the state.\u2019\u201d\u00a0Meanwhile, as folks wait for their COVID vaccines, \u201can unremitting new wave of lockdowns may make them wonder if what they really need is a dose of hemlock.\u201d<\/p>\n

Archbishop: Strong Families Are the \u2018Antidote\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

At First Things,\u00a0Archbishop Emeritus Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia<\/a>\u00a0laments how modern consumerist society \u201ccontrols the self with massive advertising, media<\/a> fantasies and a limited range of material choices.\u201d The antidote is \u201cstrong families,\u201d since \u201cnothing has more persuasive power than self-sacrifice\u201d \u2014 \u201cgiving oneself to or for another, purely for the sake of the other.\u201d How do we build them? Step 1: Recognize that \u201cactions speak louder than words. . . . A son who grows up in a home where the father mistreats the mother will have a hard time learning how to respect and love women. Personal witness shapes the world, whether we act consciously or not.\u00a0 Children see everything. If parents love each other, their children learn love. If parents love God, their children learn faith.\u201d<\/p>\n
