But that\u2019s not the only historic statistic of the <strong>2021 Oscars<\/strong>.\u00a0For the first time in the Oscars\u2019 nearly 100-year history, more than one female director has been nominated in the best director category. One of those directors,\u00a0<em>Nomadland<\/em>\u2018s\u00a0<strong>Chlo\u00e9 Zhao<\/strong>, is the first woman of color to be nominated for Best Director. Meanwhile, Fennell is the first woman to be nominated for a feature directorial debut, and became the third woman to receive three nominations, following Sofia Coppola for\u00a0<em>Lost in Translation<\/em> and\u00a0Fran Walsh for\u00a0<em>The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In total, only five women have ever been nominated for Best Director, with the first being\u00a0Lina Wertm\u00fcller in 1977 for\u00a0<em>Seven Beauties<\/em>, followed by Jane Campion for\u00a0<em>The Piano<\/em> in\u00a01994, Sofia Coppola for 2003\u2019s\u00a0<em>Lost in Translation<\/em>, Kathryn Bigelow for the\u00a0<em>The Hurt Locker\u00a0<\/em>in 2010, and Greta Gerwig for\u00a0<em>Lady Bird <\/em>in\u00a02018. Wolfe\u2019s\u00a0<em>Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom<\/em>, <strong>Viola Davis<\/strong> has officially become the most nominated Black actress in Academy Awards history. Davis has four career Oscar nominations, for Best Supporting Actress in\u00a0<em>Doubt,<\/em> Best Supporting Actress in\u00a0<em>Fences<\/em>, Best Supporting Actress in\u00a0<em>The Help<\/em>, and now her nod for\u00a0<em>Ma Rainey<\/em>. Actors of Asian descent have been nominated for the category before, including Yul Brunner who won for\u00a0<em>The King and I<\/em>, Topol for\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>, Ben Kingsley twice for\u00a0<em>Gandhi<\/em> (for which he won) and\u00a0<em>House of Sand and Fog<\/em>, but Yeun marks the first\u00a0East Asian and Asian-American actor to be nominated for Best Actor. He is the first Muslim actor to be nominated for the category, following two wins by Mahershal Ali in the supporting actor category for\u00a0\u00a0<em>Moonlight<\/em>\u00a0(2016) and\u00a0<em>Greenbook<\/em>\u00a0(2018). Of the 20 nominees, only four are white Americans.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Yeun and Ahmed\u2019s historic nominations, Yeun\u2019s\u00a0<em>Minari<\/em> co-star\u00a0<strong>Yuh-Jung Youn<\/strong> became the first Korean person ever nominated for an acting Oscar.
