The P.C. police have come for the Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the entertainment outlet tweeted<\/a> a headline meant to celebrate the fact that this year\u2019s Oscars nominations feature more actors of Asian descent than ever before in the event\u2019s 92-year history, including Steven Yeun and Youn Yuh-jung for \u201cMinari,\u201d Riz Ahmed for \u201cThe Sound of Metal\u201d and director Chlo\u00e9 Zhao for \u201cNomadland.\u201d Screenwriter Lee Isaac Chung and producer Christina Oh have also been nominated for their work in \u201cMinari.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDiverse Field Sees Asian Actors Shatter a Bamboo Ceiling<\/a>,\u201d the original headline read. <\/p>\n

The accompanying story was tweeted out Monday, but quickly elicited cringes across the internet. It was \u201cratio\u2019ed\u201d by followers with a mere 800 likes before noon, but more than 3,700 retweets \u2014 and counting \u2014 which point to the \u201cproblematic<\/a>\u201d headline, as one critic put it.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease change this offensive headline,\u201d urged entertainment writer Jason Fraley<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mocked one follower<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019m surprised the article doesn\u2019t play a gong sound when you open it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid the backlash, one reader attempted to bring context to the term \u201cbamboo ceiling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe term \u2018bamboo ceiling\u2019 was coined by author Jane Hyun in her 2005 book, \u201cBreaking the Bamboo Ceiling: Career Strategies for Asians,\u201d added @chidoofauxreal<\/a>. Despite the author\u2019s ethnicity, others argued that the phrase was invented well before diversity discourse had become the hot-button conversation it is today \u2014 but was as racist then as it is today.<\/p>\n

Overwhelming criticism eventually prompted the Hollywood Reporter writer Rebecca Sun, who produced the article in question, to defend the decision.<\/p>\n

My editor, who is not Asian, was worried about it, but it\u2019s a conscious choice I made to reference the phrase\u2019s usage in the corporate world (the difficulty Asian executives have in breaking through to upper management),\u201d clarified Sun<\/a>, in response to one of the many calls<\/a> to amend the headline. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely not meant to be a cheeky pun or anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the response to Sun\u2019s statement has also been mixed \u2014 even by fellow Asian writers, such as self-proclaimed \u201crecovering music journalist\u201d Esta Park.<\/p>\n

Alongside the now-notorious meme depicting a disapp<\/a>roving Oprah during her interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry earlier this month, Vulture writer E. Alex Jung asked, rhetorically, \u201cbamboo ceiling discourse in twenty twenty one?\u201d <\/p>\n

The 93rd Academy Awards will be simulcast from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood as well as Los Angeles\u2019 Union Station on April 25, to be aired live on ABC.\n <\/div>\n
