“#Shia LaBeouf marred Vanessa Kirby’s Oscar chances<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Vanessa Kirby triumphed over two things to win her Oscar nomination for \u201cPieces of a Woman\u201d today: The film\u2019s bleak plot and the scandal surrounding her co-star, Shia LaBeouf. <\/p>\n

But the British actress, who gives a brilliant, intense performance as a woman who loses her baby in childbirth, is considered a long shot for the win \u2014 and LaBeouf\u2019s presence in the film could make the odds longer still.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t help that LaBeouf\u2019s character becomes increasingly abusive toward his traumatized wife (Kirby), attempting to force her to have sex with him in one scene, and in another, throwing a large ball at her face while she\u2019s holding a lit cigarette. It\u2019s exactly the kind of behavior that calls to mind allegations by FKA Twigs<\/a>, 33, in her December lawsuit against LaBeouf, 34, which include \u201csexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress.\u201d Similar claims against him have since been echoed by other women<\/a>. LaBeouf has denied the allegations.<\/p>\n

Netflix attempted to get out ahead of the potential backlash, removing LaBeouf\u2019s name<\/a> from some ads as well as its extensive \u201cFor Your Consideration\u201d awards site. Kirby also released her own statement<\/a> several days before \u201cPieces of a Woman\u201d debuted in early January: \u201cI stand with all survivors of abuse and respect the courage of anyone who speaks their truth. Regarding the recent news<\/a>, I can\u2019t comment on an ongoing legal case.\u201d<\/p>\n

Can an up-and-coming actress catch a break? Kirby, 32, has a fairly lengthy r\u00e9sum\u00e9 \u2014 she wowed as the White Widow in 2018\u2019s \u201cMission: Impossible \u2014 Fallout,\u201d a role she\u2019s set to reprise \u2014 and played Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of \u201cThe Crown.\u201d She shouldn\u2019t be dragged down by the alleged behavior of a co-star.<\/p>\n

Kirby\u2019s had a bad year in that respect: In the lesbian period-drama \u201cThe World to Come,\u201d her husband is played by Casey Affleck, Oscar winner for 2016\u2019s \u201cManchester by the Sea,\u201d who was accused of sexual harassment and subsequently bowed out of presenting<\/a> at the Academy Awards ceremony in 2018, reportedly due to the backlash.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time an actress\u2019 chance at Oscar recognition has been potentially damaged by toxicity around her film. As Grazia magazine observed<\/a>, Kirsten Dunst seemed a likely Oscar nominee in 2011 for her role in Lars von Trier\u2019s \u201cMelancholia.\u201d She won best actress at the Cannes film fest, but shortly thereafter, \u201cat the press conference following the film\u2019s world premiere, the Danish director told the room that he \u2018understand[s]\u2019 Hitler and identifies as a Nazi.\u201d No Oscar nominations were forthcoming for the film.<\/p>\n

And in 2017, Kate Winslet was lauded for her performance in Woody Allen\u2019s \u201cWonder Wheel,\u201d but the air quickly went out of any nomination talk as discussion kicked up around the long-standing allegations of sexual abuse against Allen by his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. Winslet has since said that she regretted working with Allen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Before the allegations against LaBeouf came out, Kirby was the subject of rampant awards speculation, although the grim nature of \u201cPieces of a Women\u201d is also potentially off-putting to voters, as the Hollywood Reporter noted<\/a> back in the fall, writing, \u201cIt is hard to imagine who the audience is for a two-plus-hour film as oppressively dark as this one, which sometimes feels better suited for the stage (think Eugene O\u2019Neill) than the screen.\u201d Actresses who have been Oscar-nominated for grief-centric roles, they noted, such as Nicole Kidman in \u201cRabbit Hole\u201d and Michelle Williams in \u201cBlue Valentine,\u201d did not score wins.<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen how much Kirby will be tainted by association with LaBeouf. Given the preponderance of evidence that he\u2019s a disaster not only in his personal life but on set as well \u2014 most recently prompting director Olivia Wilde to implement a \u201czero a \u2013 -hole\u201d policy after he left her \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s testament to Kirby\u2019s strength and talent that she received the nomination, which is, in itself, a significant achievement.<\/p>\n

Or maybe the academy should just add a new category going forward: Best Performance by an Actress Despite her A \u2013 \u2013 Hole Co-Star.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
