Monday night, we learned that he gave his final rose to Rachael Kirkconnell. Though after <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/02\/26\/rachael-kirkconnell-of-bachelor-asks-fans-to-stop-defending-her\/\">photos of her attending an Antabellum-themed party<\/a> were revealed online, he had to end their relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Watching the first black Bachelor in franchise history be in so much pain was difficult. Heartbreak is one thing; racial trauma is another. Having to suffer through both in the name of entertainment on live TV is not fair.  \u201cI didn\u2019t sign up to have this conversation,\u201d he said on the episode.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s everything that went down on the tough season finale. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Matts_family_meets_Michelle\"><\/span>Matt\u2019s family meets Michelle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>His mom Patty \u2014 an absolute peach \u2014 and brother John sat down with his lady loves, the first being Michelle. Off the bat, Patty was doubtful. She said it would be a \u201clong shot\u201d for Matt to get engaged.<\/p>\n<p>When sitting down with Patty, Michelle was blunt: she\u2019s deeply in love with Matt, and wants to support him. Patty told her that it was \u201can honor\u201d to hear her feelings for her son. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Matts_family_meets_Rachael\"><\/span>Matt\u2019s family meets Rachael<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Rachael was beaming when she opened up to John about how strongly she feels for his brother. The couple seemed natural when hanging with his family. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking privately to Matt, Patty noticed how her son could be his real self around Rachael. When the two ladies sat down for a chat, Rachael talked about her faith: Matt began his journey on \u201cThe Bachelor\u201d with a prayer, and she felt like God brought them together. Patty broke down in tears.<\/p>\n<p>After Rachael left, the family gathered to help Matt with his decision: The conversations went much better than Matt\u2019s difficult (and contraversial) talk with his dad during last week\u2019s episode. Patty and John loved both girls \u2014 but were still iffy on the idea of Matt getting engaged. They know first-hand what happens when love fades. It was scary as hell, but not as tough as their chat afterwards. Michelle was overflowing with affirming thoughts about their relationship: she was 100% sure he was the one. She came prepared, complete with custom jerseys with \u201cMr. and Mrs. James\u201d written on the back. But Matt was doubting himself, and had to tell her that. \u201cThis is the first time I\u2019ve felt anything outside of wanting to be with you forever\u2026 I\u2019ve been pushing through that feeling today,\u201d he told her. \u201cI don\u2019t think I can get there with you.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Michelle was shocked and heartbroken. She curled up in a corner and cried.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rachaels_final_date\"><\/span>Rachael\u2019s final date<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With only one woman left, he still had a decision to make: He didn\u2019t want to put Rachael through what his mom went through, getting engaged to a man who wasn\u2019t ready for marriage. <\/p>\n<p>Because he needed time to figure out what he wanted, Chris Harrison canceled his time with Rachael, telling her Matt was feeling lost. <\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, ring peddler Neil Lane showed up to therapize Matt, and have him pick out an engagement ring that he may or may not use. He said he would know his decision when he saw Rachael \u2014 which probably isn\u2019t how you want to feel before committing to spend the rest of your life with someone. <\/p>\n<p>Rachael was terrified. \u201cWhen I imagined how it would feel standing before you like this, and the yesterday happened and changed everything,\u201d she said. \u201cI hated, more than anything, the thought of you hurting and you being confused.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t propose to you today, but that doesn\u2019t mean I want to lose you,\u201d he told her. \u201cWhen I think about the life I want to live, I think of you. I want to leave here with you.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Rachael was fine with that \u2014 they kissed and confessed their love to one another. Of course, Matt gave her the final rose. They rode off in a horse and carriage. He brought a much needed perspective that Chris never could, given the issues and race that were made front and center while this season aired. <\/p>\n<p>First up, Michelle: She told Emmanuel that on the night of their breakup, she asked Matt for a conversation so she could understand why he broke her heart, but he refused to give it to her. \u201cI had to fill in the gaps of what our relationship really was, and I wasn\u2019t OK,\u201d she told her ex. Matt knew that there was no justification for his actions, and apologized. Though she doesn\u2019t hold any ill will towards him, \u201cI hope you find more expressions than \u2018thank you for sharing,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>Next, Matt talked with Emmanuel about the pressure he faced to represent all black men as the first black bachelor in franchise history. After filming ended, Matt compared his time with Rachael to a \u201choneymoon,\u201d until the rumors about her past came out. At first, Matt tried to support her and dismissed the talk as just that, rumors. But when Rachael publicly owned up to the photos, Matt had to take care of himself and the hurt she caused him. <\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re no longer together. \u201cIf you don\u2019t understand that something like that is problematic in 2018, there\u2019s a lot of me that you won\u2019t understand,\u201d he said of the three-year-old photos. \u201cI stepped back and let her do the work she\u2019s committed to doing.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Rachael then took the stage to own up to her ignorance. \u201cPeople need to realize saying \u2018this is normal where I come from\u2019 doesn\u2019t make it right,\u201d she said. Though she grew up in the south, she never questioned what those dresses meant and what she was celebrating, which she says was on her. <\/p>\n<p>Though she was \u201cblindsided\u201d by Matt breaking up with her, she it made her realize that \u201che must be really, really hurt\u201d by her actions. \u201cI lost the love of my life \u2026 I love him so much and I always will,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>When Matt was brought back out, Rachael apolgized to him. He was visably upset and could barely speak. \u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking, it\u2019s disapointing,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I questioned our relationship, it was in the context of you not understanding my blackness \u2026 that\u2019s why we can\u2019t be in a relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Rachael is educating herself, Matt knows it can\u2019t be his burden to usher her through this reckoning: \u201cI don\u2019t want to be emotionally responsible for those tears,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>The show tried to end on a happy note: Both Katie Thurston and Michelle <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/03\/15\/katie-thurston-and-michelle-young-both-named-bachelorettes\/\">were announced as \u201cThe Bachelorette,\u201d<\/a> they\u2019ll start filming their subsequent seasons soon. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s to hoping Bachelor Nation does better next time around.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
