\n China is notorious for cracking down on apps that don\u2019t let the government monitor content on them. And encrypted messaging app Signal being down for many users in the country is seemingly another case of that.<\/p>\n

Earlier this morning, a lot of people based in\u00a0China reported that Signal is not working for them unless they use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service.<\/p>\n

As TechCrunch<\/a> noted, the website of the app has been banned in the country since yesterday, while the app is still available on the\u00a0App Store. So for now, there are no government orders for Apple to remove the app.<\/p>\n

According to app analytics firm SensorTower, the iOS version of Signal has been downloaded over 510,000 times in China to date. Globally, the app has crossed 100 million downloads across the App Store and the Play Store.<\/p>\n

While Google Play is not officially available in China, alternative Android app stores don\u2019t list Signal because of the country\u2019s censorship law.<\/p>\n

In January, when WhatsApp<\/a> issued an update to its privacy policy, a ton of users started to migrate to Signal and Telegram, including the ones in China. However, there\u2019s no way to monitor messages on Signal because of end-to-end encryption protection for chats.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t know as of now if this ban is permanent, but because of the messaging app\u2019s privacy-focused<\/span>\u00a0nature, I won\u2019t be surprised if that\u2019s the case.<\/p>\n
