If confirmed by other studies, this could be the most distant\u00a0object of its type ever seen by astronomers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"14d2\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Located 12.7 billion light-years from Earth, this supermassive black hole, PSO J352.4034\u201315.3373 (or PJ352\u201315) could help explain how these objects formed in the early Universe. This ultradense body sits at the center of a young galaxy, forming a quasar.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f6f9\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Roughly a billion times more massive than the Sun, PJ352\u201315 is one of the most powerful<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck iz\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/finding-j0313-1806-the-most-distant-quasar-ever-seen-51ec506d8333?source=friends_link&amp;sk=d55c5115b0bd1d8e672ebc0fbd7c8110\">quasars<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>yet seen in the first billion years after the Big Bang. Material orbiting a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck iz\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/C4Lvmyhipu0\">black hole<\/a><span>\u00a0needs<\/span> to lose energy and speed before falling past the event horizon \u2014 the \u201cpoint of no return for material falling into a black hole.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5e34\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Magnetic fields can result in braking forces, stealing energy from material orbiting a black hole. As this material falls inward, black holes gain mass.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fb67\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cIf a playground merry-go-round is moving too fast, it\u2019s hard for a child to move towards the center, so someone or something needs to slow the ride down. This spaceborne observatory spotted X-rays from the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck iz\" href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/the-cosmic-companion\/episodes\/Quasars--Supernovae--and-the-Early-Universe---Astronomy-News-with-The-Cosmic-Companion-Jan--19--2020-ep6esp\">quasar<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>shooting 160,000 light years from the center of the quasar \u2014 a distance 60<span style=\"color: #e4e4e4;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(160, 162, 166, 0.894);\">%<\/span><\/span>\u00a0longer than the Milky Way is wide. Radio waves seen from the jet did not extend nearly as great of a distance.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e0dc\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This is, far and away, the longest such jet ever observed emanating from a quasar seen from the first billion years after the Big Bang. This result underscores how X-ray studies of distant quasars provide a critical way to study the growth of the most distant supermassive black holes,\u201d explains Eduardo Ba\u00f1ados of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA).<\/p>\n<p id=\"3e30\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The quasar PJ352\u201315 is also 300 million light years further from us than the most distant similar object known. When the light seen today by Chandra left its source, the Universe was less than a billion years old.
