Yaphet Kotto<\/strong>, star of films like\u00a0Alien<\/em>, the James Bond film\u00a0Live and Let Die<\/em>, and the TV series<\/a>\u00a0Homicide: Life on the Street<\/em>, has died at age 81.<\/p>\n

Kotto\u2019s agent\u00a0Ryan Goldhar confirmed the actor\u2019s passing to\u00a0Variety<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0Kotto\u2019s wife, Tessie Sinahon, first posted about Kotto\u2019s death on\u00a0Facebook<\/a>\u00a0Monday night.
\n\u201cI\u2019m saddened and still in shocked of the passing of my husband Yaphet of 24 years. He died last night around 10:30pm Philippine time,\u201d she wrote. \u201c\u2026You played a villain on some of your movies but for me you\u2019re a real hero and to a lot of people also. A good man, a good father, a good husband and a decent human being, very rare to find. One of the best actor in Hollywood a Legend. Rest in Peace Honey, I\u2019m gonna miss you everyday, my best friend, my rock.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kotto may be best known for playing the villain of the 1973 James Bond flick\u00a0Live and Let Die<\/em>, in which he starred as the\u00a0corrupt Caribbean dictator Dr. Kananga and his drug-pushing alter ego Mr. Big. He is also beloved for his role as the technician Dennis Parker in 1979\u2019s\u00a0Alien<\/em> and for his seven-season run as Al Giardello in the NBC series\u00a0Homicide: Life on the Street<\/em> from\u00a01993 to 1999. Other notable roles include the\u00a0Blaxploitation pic\u00a0Truck Turner\u00a0<\/em>(1974),\u00a0Report to the Commissioner\u00a0<\/em>(1975),\u00a0Friday Foster\u00a0<\/em>(1975),\u00a0The Monkey Hustle<\/em>\u00a0(1976),\u00a0Fighting Back\u00a0<\/em>(1982),\u00a0The Star Chamber\u00a0<\/em>(1983),\u00a0Warning Sign\u00a0<\/em>(1985),\u00a0Eye of the Tiger\u00a0<\/em>(1986) and\u00a0Freddy\u2019s Dead: The Final Nightmare\u00a0<\/em>(1991).<\/p>\n

Though he\u2019s been a frequent presence in both blockbuster genre films and TV, Kotto also passed on roles like\u00a0Lando Calrissian, which would go on to be played by Billy Dee Williams in\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard on\u00a0Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you get one of those big blockbuster hits, you better have some other big blockbuster hits to go with it too and be Harrison Ford, because if you don\u2019t \u2026 you place yourself right out of the business,\u201d Kotto\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in a 2003 interview.<\/p>\n

Born in New York City on November 15, 1939, Kotto began studying acting a the age of 16 at the Actors Mobile Theater Studio. At 19, he made his professional theater debut in\u00a0Othello<\/em> and continued to perform on Broadway in\u00a0The Great White Hope<\/em>. He would make his first film app<\/a>earances in movies like 1964\u2019s\u00a0Nothing But a Man<\/em> and 1968\u2019s\u00a0The Thomas Crown Affair<\/em>. He would also make a guest-star appearance as\u00a0Marine Lance Corporal on Hawaii Five-O<\/em> in 1969.
\nKotto had a rich career on both the big and small screen, but one of Kotto\u2019s longest and final roles was that of Al Giardello on Homicide: Life on the Street<\/em>, for which he also holds several scriptwriting credits. He also starred in Homicide: The Movie<\/em> in 2000, and most recently voiced Parker in the Alien: Isolation<\/em> video game<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kotto is survived by his wife and six children.<\/p>\n
