That\u2019s not to say it\u2019s an inaccurate claim, to be clear, as even the most casual viewer could likely anticipate that Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) losing Vision (Paul Bettany) in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Infinity War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would somehow figure into this idiosyncratic blend of superheroes and sitcom pastiche. If anything, that so much of the audience was on the same page about the show\u2019s overarching <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a> only reinforces the notion that the writing team was telling precisely the story that needed to be told.<\/span><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->This post contains <strong>spoilers<\/strong> for <em>WandaVision<\/em> and its finale.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they told it might be a different matter. Throwing us headfirst into the black-and-white sitcom world of Westview with no context, combined with the choice to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mystery-box its own premise<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until the penultimate episode, may have left far too much room for floundering viewers to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">baselessly speculate and complain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the early going.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many ways, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WandaVision<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exemplifies the uniquely difficult pressures of translating a largely successful cinematic approach to a different medium altogether. Blockbusters, including more than a few in the Marvel Cinematic Universe itself, have an easier time skating by on texture alone and simply gesturing at Important Topics\u2122 while doing little else with them. In television, the most effective shows are the ones that remain consistent and clear-sighted in their messaging from beginning to end, actively engaging with their themes every step of the way before bringing it all in for a narratively satisfying landing. When they fall short, well, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/tv\/game-of-thrones\/s08\/e06\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just ask <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as much as the recent <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WandaVision<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finale tries, no amount of last-minute fisticuffs and formulaic energy blasts manage to distract from the haphazard treatment of its core idea. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all the talk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about its unwavering focus on trauma and pain, \u201cThe Series Finale\u201d proves that talk is cheap and systematically dismantles the series\u2019 otherwise thoughtful examination of grief \u2013 all in the span of a single misbegotten scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stages_of_Grief\"><\/span><strong>Stages of Grief<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 --><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the aftermath of Vision\u2019s battle with his SWORD-resurrected counterpart and Wanda\u2019s defeat of villainous witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), Wanda tearfully says goodbye to her makeshift, conjured family in a pair of heartbreaking sequences. She\u2019s finally reached acceptance, the last of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/archive\/2021\/01\/wandavision-marvel-disney\/617710\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the five stages of grief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and not even the relative inattention paid to some of the previous four throughout the season can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entirely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> undercut the raw emotions of the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immediately after lifting her hex, Wanda solemnly walks away from the foundations of her dream home (with her black hoodie drawn up like a mourning veil, a neat visual shorthand for Wanda observing the funeral for Vision that she was denied) and marches through the remains of a newly-liberated Westview, silently enduring the hostile glares of the townspeople freed from her torturous mind control and psychological assault. The first person she seeks out? Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), the superhero-to-be intentionally set up as <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/io9.gizmodo.com\/monica-rambeau-was-wandavisions-real-hero-and-the-show-1846433688\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the show\u2019s moral center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a parallel to Wanda through their respective losses. At this point, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WandaVision<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems perfectly positioned to complete its thematic journey and confront hard questions about the nature of grief through the supporting character who most personifies that idea: namely, how much responsibility does a survivor of trauma bear for the pain they cause in others?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, this isn\u2019t a call for fantasy characters to be strictly held to real-world standards. Nobody expects the now fully-formed Scarlet Witch to be hauled off by the FBI to face punitive justice or <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qRxwBb7ev1Y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anything silly like that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But there must be a middle ground between the extremes of foolishly demanding that all media adhere to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/theeashleyray\/status\/1367895161972256769\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our personal sense of morality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and dismissing any attempt to depict accountability in fiction just because, well, our favorite character didn\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mean<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to hurt anybody! (The latter mindset takes on even more troubling implications when it comes to superheroes, an aspirational genre that\u2019s also notorious for presenting <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/entertainment\/2019\/11\/18\/20971289\/alan-moore-superheroes-watchmen-martin-scorsese-marvel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indulgent power fantasies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with an uncritical eye.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this make-or-break moment of truth, however, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WandaVision<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes a choice that \u2013 considering the crucial point in the story in which it arrives and the sheer complexity of the subject it\u2019s attempting to wrestle with \u2013 could uncharitably be described as cowardly. With everything on the line and our (anti?) hero only <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inches<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> away from acknowledging her culpability in an act that the writers themselves took pains to depict in horrifying detail\u2026 Monica lets Wanda completely off the hook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey\u2019ll never know what you sacrificed for them\u201d is not only an incredibly tone-deaf sentiment to direct at the person who essentially enslaved them in the first place (not to mention Wanda\u2019s \u201csacrifice\u201d is further diluted by the continued existence of some form of Vision, as well as the post-credits tease that her twins might still be out there somewhere), but it comes loaded with an extremely disturbing undercurrent about how much helpless human beings are indebted and should be grateful towards the omnipotent \u00dcbermensch. Even Wanda\u2019s seemingly penitent walk of shame through Westview takes on a more sinister, outwardly defiant tone in retrospect, as if her victimhood and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hers alone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> matters \u2013 an idea that\u2019s driven home even further when Wanda willfully condemns her defeated rival witch to additional torture as an unwilling sitcom character, despite the weirdly off-putting feeling that nothing Agatha does seems more villainous than what Wanda already did to the entirety of Westview. Wanda\u2019s half-hearted response to Monica\u2019s moral justifications, \u201cIt wouldn\u2019t change how they see me,\u201d isn\u2019t nearly unequivocal enough to reject that suggestion and make this moment anything more than what it is: <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2021\/03\/wandavision-finale-choked.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a shocking refutation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of everything <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WandaVision<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had previously claimed to represent.<\/span><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_3 --><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removing herself from society and hiding out in a remote wilderness cabin could be seen as a suggestion that she\u2019s cognizant of the harm she\u2019s done to others, but isn\u2019t this just a different way of avoiding a harsh truth and instead burying herself in yet another heightened dreamworld (further emphasized by her astral projection flipping through pages of Agatha\u2019s Book of the Damned)? The MCU has made a living out of encouraging fans to \u201cWait for the next one!\u201d to see how hanging threads and loose ends get tied up, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WandaVision<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one case where that mentality just doesn\u2019t cut it anymore. It\u2019s about more than just plot mechanics. Added together, these final scenes are a tacit admission that Wanda\u2019s emotional arc is not only incomplete, but regressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WandaVision<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t a story about grief and how we navigate it, but a story about avoiding it. We go from a theme best epitomized by Vision\u2019s insightful maxim about grief as the perseverance of love, to an equivocation that <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/emilyvdw\/status\/1368055912175308800\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all but shrugs off<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the less palatable consequences of pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Punches_Pulled_and_Lessons_Unlearned\"><\/span><strong>Punches Pulled and Lessons Unlearned<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou were pulling your punches.\u201d In the midst of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_VPkcMai_H8?t=50\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the spectacle-filled airport fight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during 2016\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain America: Civil War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Wanda interrupts Hawkeye and Black Widow\u2019s playful sparring session and bluntly lobs this accusation at the mentor who recruited her to the Avengers in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On its face, at least, this is a funny and shrewd line that acknowledges what\u2019s at stake. But this wry one-liner risks feeling hollow once you consider what immediately preceded it: Wanda pulls <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her own<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> punch and merely throws Black Widow a few feet away, unharmed and incapacitated for only the briefest of moments. Not quite the mic-drop it\u2019s clearly meant to be, is it? Looking back, it\u2019s a very minor but typical example of the MCU trying to have it both ways \u2013 preemptively warding off potential criticism (\u201cWhy aren\u2019t they taking this fight seriously?\u201d) with self-aware, observational humor\u2026 but never actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addressing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> those issues in any significant way beyond the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five years later, this quick exchange and Wanda\u2019s line in particular suddenly feel less like a microcosm of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s mixed ambitions and more like an eerie foreshadowing of Wanda herself; or rather, of the story <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WandaVision<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attempts to tell with the character. In terms of having its cake and eating it too, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WandaVision<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reluctantly draws attention to Wanda\u2019s flaws but bends over backwards to avoid alienating fans who love the character\u2019s heroic ideals.
