Disney has officially begun shooting Peter Pan and Wendy<\/strong><\/em>, another adaptation of the classic fantasy tale written by J.M. Barrie<\/strong>. With inspiration from the 1953 animated adaptation from Disney, director David Lowery<\/strong> (Pete\u2019s Dragon<\/em>) is at the helm of this new take on the old favorite with Jude Law<\/strong> playing the dastardly Captain Hook.<\/span><\/p>\n

Disney sent out a press release today announcing the beginning of production on Peter Pan and Wendy<\/em>, which will be one of the many original movies<\/a> arriving on Disney+ in 2022 <\/strong>rather than going to theaters. Here\u2019s the official synopsis for the movie:<\/p>\n

Based on J. M. Barrie\u2019s novel \u201cPeter and Wendy\u201d and inspired by the 1953 animated classic,\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cPeter Pan & Wendy\u201d is the timeless tale of a\u00a0young girl who, defying her parents\u2019 wishes to attend boarding school, travel<\/a>s with her two younger brothers to the magical Neverland. There, she meets a boy who refuses to grow up, a tiny fairy and an evil pirate captain, and they soon find themselves on a thrilling and dangerous adventure far, far away from their family and the comforts of home.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sounds like a pretty standard take on the Peter Pan story. There will be one significant change for one of the characters though, because Grown-ish<\/em> star Yara Shahidi<\/strong> is playing Tinkerbell, marking the first time a Black actress is playing the character in a major production. As for the titular characters, Peter Pan will be played by Alexander Molony<\/strong> (The Reluctant Landlord<\/em>) and Ever Anderson<\/strong> (Black Widow<\/em>) is playing Wendy.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Darling will be played by Alan Tudyk<\/strong> (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story<\/em>) and Molly Parker<\/strong> (House of Cards<\/em>). Wendy\u2019s brothers John and Michael will be played by newcomers Joshua Pickering<\/strong> and Jacobi Jupe<\/strong>. Comedia<\/a>n Jim Gaffigan<\/strong> will provide some comic relief as Captain Hook\u2019s sidekick Smee, and the Native American character Tiger Lily will be played by indigenous actress Alyssa Wapanat\u00e2hk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In a statement, director David Lowery said:<\/p>\n

\u201cPeter Pan has long been one of my favorite stories,\u00a0partially because I\u2019ve always resisted growing up, but also because of the\u00a0heart, adventure and imagination that makes J.M. Barrie\u2019s original tale so evergreen. I\u2019m thrilled to have the opportunity to redefine his iconic characters for a new generation \u2013 and even more excited that\u00a0I get to do\u00a0so with such an exceptional cast and crew.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Peter Pan and Wendy<\/em> doesn\u2019t have an exact release date yet, but we\u2019ll see it on Disney+ sometime in 2022<\/strong>.
