“#City Hall \u2018demoralized\u2019 by de Blasio as staffers jump ship<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n City Hall employees have been \u201cdemoralized\u201d by Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s refusal to listen to his staff, leading to bungled administration responses to what are arguably the biggest issues of our time \u2014 the coronavirus pandemic and the George Floyd protests, sources told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of the office is pretty demoralized,\u201d a source said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWere it not for the fact that it\u2019s hard to guarantee a paycheck right now, I think a lot more people would be headed for the exits,\u201d the source added, referring to the sudden joint departures of two longtime senior advisers.<\/p>\n

Press Secretary Freddi Goldstein and Communications Director Wiley Norvell, who have a combined 13 years with Hizzoner, both said Wednesday they are stepping down but not moving on to other jobs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a situation like right now with COVID, with the George Floyd protests, his style has to be especially grating [to staffers],\u201d the source explained, noting de Blasio is \u201cespecially bullheaded,\u201d and \u201cconvinced of his own best way to handle things.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Post reported this spring that de Blasio was micromanaging the city\u2019s coronavirus response and ignoring the advice of health experts who work for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople feel like they can\u2019t do their jobs and can\u2019t voice their opinions, even internally,\u201d said a City Hall insider.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe often perceives internal disagreements as potentially undermining or coming from people incapable of seeing the bigger picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s left people frustrated and exhausted,\u201d the insider said.<\/p>\n

Added to that, staff who thought they\u2019d gone to work for a progressive mayor were dismayed when de Blasio backed use-of-force by the NYPD during the demonstrations last month. Current and former employees wrote open letters to the mayor expressing their disapp<\/a>ointment and even marched across the Brooklyn Bridge in an unprecedented public display of disgust with the mayor they serve.<\/p>\n

Another source said Goldstein, who was promoted to press secretary in April 2019 after serving more junior roles in the administration, \u201cis fed up\u201d with her boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know she\u2019s totally burnt out and that she\u2019s over him and she\u2019s over all of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not taking a new job so that tells you all you need to know,\u201d that source said.<\/p>\n

Rebecca Katz, a former de Blasio confidante, slammed the mayor at the time for hitting his favorite Brooklyn gym in March just hours before the governor closed the state\u2019s fitness facilities because of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo current or former staff member should be asked to defend this. The Mayor\u2019s actions today are inexcusable and reckless,\u201d Katz tweeted at the time.<\/p>\n

Goldstein was left to try to explain the head-scratching move, telling The Post in a statement in March, \u201cThe YMCA has been a huge part of his and his family\u2019s life\u2026it\u2019s clear that\u2019s about to change and before that, the mayor wanted to visit a place that keeps him grounded one last time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goldstein confirmed to The Post Thursday she\u2019s taking time off after leaving her position next week, but disputed claims that she\u2019s leaving because she\u2019s fed up with the mayor.<\/p>\n

She said it\u2019s a \u201cnatural time to transition\u201d because \u201cthe city is at a turning point, reopening after the crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a long few months, and we\u2019ve both been here a long time,\u201d she said, referring to herself and Norvell.<\/p>\n

Norvell did not return a message from The Post about his departure. He also doesn\u2019t have another position lined up.<\/p>\n

Emma Wolfe, de Blasio\u2019s chief of staff, praised Goldstein\u2019s tenure.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mayor and the entire team have leaned on Freddi more than ever these past four months. She\u2019s been fierce, effective and good-humored through the toughest days this city has ever faced. There\u2019s nothing but admiration and respect for her amazing service in this crisis,\u201d Wolfe said.<\/p>\n

De Blasio hasn\u2019t named Norvell\u2019s replacement but Goldstein\u2019s successor is Bill Neidhardt, the former spokesman for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders\u2019s presidential campaign.<\/p>\n

Remaining staff grumbled that de Blasio chose a white male outsider, instead of a person of color already working for his administration, given his stated commitment to racial inclusion.<\/p>\n

Asked during Thursday\u2019s press briefing about his choice to name Neidhardt as his next press secretary, de Blasio said vaguely that the former Sanders spokesman was the right person for the high-profile job given his \u201cparticular combination of experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor also boasted that his is the most diverse administration in the city\u2019s history.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
