It\u2019s the perfect way to get inked during a pandemic. <\/p>\n

A woman in the Netherlands has received a tattoo remotely by an artist more than 300 miles away in the UK \u2014 made possible with 5G cellular technology<\/a> and the latest in robotics.<\/p>\n

The futuristic stunt was organized by T-Mobile Netherlands and London-based technologist Noel Drew as part of a marketing campaign to demonstrate the power of 5G.<\/p>\n

London ink artist Wes Thomas was enlisted to operate the robot app<\/a>endage, with tattoo needle attached, to reproduce one of his abstract designs onto the inner forearm of Dutch actress Stijn Fransen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 5G tattoo may have been a world first, but it was [also] an authentic use of cutting-edge technology, combined with an ancient art, to tell a very human story,\u201d Drew told PCMag earlier this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The experiment was entirely novel, Drew explained, as every component of the operation had to be specially designed and manufactured for this particular purpose. <\/p>\n

During a period over six weeks last year, Drew\u2019s team at international design studio the Mill<\/a> rigorously tested the technology for safety and accuracy. \u201cMany butternut squash were harmed in the test cycle before it was refined and ready for reality,\u201d he joked. <\/p>\n

Thomas worked closely with the engineers to refine the robot arm\u2019s technique and advise on the unique aspects of using tattoo tools on human skin.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with Wes was fascinating and terrifying at the same time,\u201d said Drew, who admitted he had never explored the nuances of tattooing before. \u201cThere was so much more to consider\u201d than he was aware of, such as the fact tattoo needles are typically dipped in ink after each stroke. To replicate this movement would have been \u201ca nightmare,\u201d said Drew, whose team instead developed an alternative ink-reservoir system. <\/p>\n

Another unique challenge was the effort to mimic how tattoo artists manipulate skin to get the cleanest, most precise lines. \u201cThe tattoo artist has a deep understanding of human skin, which changes hugely depending on the location on the body and also from person to person,\u201d said Drew. This was ultimately solved by artificially pulling Fransen\u2019s skin taut with bandages, and strapping down her arm to the chair in case she was tempted to squirm.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was so unbelievably calm about the whole thing,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Drew also stressed that he does not consider robotic tattooing to become the norm anytime soon, or possibly ever. <\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t trying to replace traditional tattooing [or] the human aspect of tattooing with this robot-led concept,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve been careful not to be seen as trivializing the art form, especially after getting such an understanding of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The scientist also sat in the \u201chot seat\u201d to get his own ink, as a \u201csouvenir\u201d from the project. \u201cIt\u2019s the symbol for an incandescent light bulb,\u201d he said, \u201can appropriate crossover between technology and creativity, even if some people do think it\u2019s a Pok\u00e9mon reference.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
