Long Island Rail Road labor leaders want the MTA to halt all construction work by outside contractors \u2014 after one of its hired hands was electrocuted over the weekend.<\/p>\n

In a letter to MTA exec Janno Lieber on Saturday immedia<\/a>tely following the incident, union heads Anthony Simon and Christopher Natale demanded Lieber \u201cconduct immediate safety stand downs for third party contractors,\u201d according to a copy of the text obtained by The Post.<\/p>\n

A female contractor working on a pedestrian bridge at Mineola station as part of the LIRR\u2019s $2.6 billion \u201cThird Track\u201d expansion effort was seriously injured Saturday morning after a crane hit a high voltage power line and \u201ccreated an arc\u201d to the bridge, injuring the woman, according to official accounts.<\/p>\n

The injury was one of many recent mishaps by outside contractors working on LIRR projects, Simon and Natale charged in their letter. <\/p>\n

Other incidents included a December accidental electrocution and an incident on March 9 in which four LIRR workers \u201cwere forced to escape through a plexiglass window\u201d after contractors demolished an adjacent building without warning, the men wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese incidents are incredibly concerning to us as labor leaders,\u201d they said \u2014 noting that LIRR workers \u201chistorically have handled the great majority of the work on LIRR property.\u201d<\/p>\n

The LIRR\u2019s role in capital construction allows workers to earner overtime pay, since the work usually takes place during weekends, an MTA source said. <\/p>\n

Five LIRR workers currently face federal charges of overtime fraud and conspiracy \u2014 including for hours earned working on capital projects.<\/p>\n

In a written response date Saturday, Lieber promised a \u201cfull investigation\u201d into Saturday\u2019s electrocution. Work will not resume until \u201cresponsible safety professionals\u2026 are satisfied that any finding and recommendations coming out of the investigation have been addressed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lieber declined the labor leaders\u2019 call to pause all work by outside contractors.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have successfully progressed on important projects\u2026. using a combination of our dedicated in-house forces and skilled union labor crafts,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese projects often require specialized trades and have historically employed skilled contractor labor.\u201d<\/p>\n
