Fortune\u2019s unionized staffers staged a 24-hour work stoppage on Tuesday over\u00a0alleged\u00a0unfair pay practices and other concerns..<\/p>\n

Roughly 35 writers, copy editors and other members of the News<\/a>Guild stopped working at 9 a.m. Tuesday over what the union says is the company\u2019s efforts to encourage its members to keep their salaries secret. This has created a wage disparity that has women staffers earning 84 percent of what men make, and workers of color making 78 percent what their white colleagues do, the union said.<\/p>\n

The work stoppage is also meant to protest the business magazine\u2019s alleged failure to come to the bargaining table on diversity and for implementing a new performance evaluation system without first negotiating with the union.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey refuse to bargain in good faith,\u201d said Rey Mashayekhi, a Fortune staffer, at a Zoom press conference about the walkout.<\/p>\n

\u201cManagement has been slowing the process and refusing to respond to a lot of our proposals,\u201d added McKenna Moore, a union rep and an assistant audience engagement editor at the publication. \u201cQuite frankly, we\u2019re done with playing nicely.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the magazine blasted the notion that it\u2019s not been working toward a solution to the union\u2019s gripes. \u201cWe\u2019re surprised and disapp<\/a>ointed by the action the union has decided to take today. Fortune has been bargaining with the union in good faith, and will continue to do so going forward,\u201d the company said in a statement. <\/p>\n

Thai businessman Chatchaval Jiaravanon purchased Fortune from Meredith for $150 million in December 2018 and increased the editorial staff by 44 percent in the first year of ownership, growing it to 85 journalists worldwide, including 70 in the US.<\/p>\n

But once the pandemic hit in March 2020, Fortune cut back 35 total staffers worldwide and cut pay for top management by 30 percent. Fortune said it has since resumed hiring and added seven editorial positions\u00a0so far this year with the hope of adding five more by the end of the month.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
