Isn\u2019t this a turn up for the books. Ride-hailing giant Uber is doing as it\u2019s told and will pay its British workers a proper minimum wage, pension, and holiday pay.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-56412397\">BBC reports<\/a>, Uber has said that it will pay its 70,000 UK-based drivers the nation\u2019s national minimum living wage of \u00a38.72 ($12.14) an hour to over-25s \u2014 but with a big juicy caveat.<\/p>\n<p>                <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/epvmxh57cx?videoFoam=true&amp;autoplay=true&amp;silentAutoPlay=true\" title=\"Bumper 06 Video\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span>Uber said that it did not expect the change to result in higher fares. This is surprising for a company still struggling to turn a consistent profit, it\u2019s not exactly clear where or how it\u2019ll absorb the costs \u2014 but it probably has to do with their interpretation of the courts ruling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court\u2019s ruling states that drivers should be paid from the moment they log on to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>, to when they log off. However, Uber is only committing to paying drivers a minimum wage for the time they\u2019re actually transporting a passenger.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, drivers are still going to be shortchanged for their time, and won\u2019t be reimbursed for the time <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing between jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Uber has continually argued against rulings which demand it to pay its drivers appropriate benefits for the work they do.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the UK last month the country\u2019s Supreme Court made a final ruling in a case that started back in 2016. The decision stated that Uber must recognize its drivers as workers, and subsequently pay them a minimum wage, and other benefits.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Its_not_all_bad\"><\/span>It\u2019s not all bad<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Drivers still get to keep something that has been incredibly important to their working conditions. Drivers will retain the freedom to choose if, when, and where they drive.<\/p>\n<p>Uber has previously conflated its workers\u2019 status with flexibility, saying that if it had to recognize workers as employees drivers wouldn\u2019t get to choose when they work. This proves that doesn\u2019t have to be the case.<\/p>\n<p>Following the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling, it looked like Uber was going to try and find a way to weasel its way out of its responsibility yet again. Which it kind of has done, by not fully committing to paying drivers for the whole time they\u2019re on the app.<\/p>\n<p>However, because the UK is no longer part of the European Union, and the Supreme Court is the country\u2019s highest court, the ride-hailing giant had nowhere to escalate the case to in an attempt to buy itself more time.<\/p>\n<p>Uber then has taken the decision to do the absolute bare minimum allowed \u2014 big surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Taking on Uber\u2019s Goliath, the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling is beginning to reshape the gig-economy, and marks a massive challenge for the ride-hailing company. Hopefully for the better, but there\u2019s still a way to go before Uber follows the ruling entirely to the letter.<\/p>\n<p>It seems, no matter what the cost, Uber just has to <em>disrupt.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><i><span>Do EVs excite your electrons?
