\n The Trump administration is planning to launch a pandemic response division at the State Department, according to a new report.<\/p>\n

National Security Council officials hosted an interagency meeting Thursday to discuss plans for the new office, CNN reports, as a similar division previously existed within the NSC.<\/p>\n

That office was shuttered in 2018.<\/p>\n

A senior administration official told the network that the pandemic unit will be overseen by a new position that is being created: coordinator for pandemics.<\/p>\n

Thursday\u2019s meeting focused on flushing out details and establishing a proposal for President Trump to app<\/a>rove.<\/p>\n

The original NSC pandemic unit was created by President Obama during his second term in office.<\/p>\n

Former National Security Adviser John Bolton, who was present when the unit was shuttered, defended that decision in a tweet in March of this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaims that streamlining NSC structures impaired our nation\u2019s bio defense are false. Global health remained a top NSC priority, and its expert team was critical to effectively handling the 2018-19 Africa Ebola crisis,\u201d he wrote, adding, \u201cThe angry Left just can\u2019t stop attacking, even in a crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump also defended the closing of the office at the time, denying any involvement in the move.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know anything about it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The administration had come under scrutiny for the office being shut down as the coronavirus pandemic began to hit in full.<\/p>\n

A State Department spokesperson did not immedia<\/a>tely respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment on the matter.<\/p>\n
