“#NY Assembly speaker wants Gov. Cuomo’s accusers interviewed ‘under oath’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The leader of New York\u2019s Assembly privately cast doubt on the spiraling allegations against Gov. Andrew Cuomo \u2014 and said his accusers will have to be interviewed \u201cunder oath,\u201d according to a report Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-The Bronx) \u2014 who authorized an impeachment investigation of Cuomo last week \u2014 also warned Democratic legislators not to rush to judgment, noting that \u201cpeople get accused of things,\u201d Yahoo! News<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese days any one of us in this place could be accused,\u201d Heastie said.<\/p>\n

Heastie\u2019s remarks were recorded during a nearly four-hour video conference call with the entire Democratic Assembly conference that preceded his Thursday announcement that the Judiciary Committee would \u201cexamine allegations of misconduct\u201d against Cuomo, Yahoo! News said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Heastie argued against immedia<\/a>tely drafting articles of impeachment against the three-term Democrat by saying some allegations were \u201cbased on a newspaper article or other people\u2019s assertions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to get witness testimony. We need to hear from people who have this information. You put them under oath,\u201d Heastie said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey may have made false statements. I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heastie said some interviews conducted by the Judiciary Committee \u201cwould not be made public\u201d but added that \u201csome people could be called in front of the committee as part of a hearing.<\/p>\n

Heastie also said he had \u201cno idea what the time frame is,\u201d adding, \u201cAn outside firm is going to have to be hired that deals with this type of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

During Thursday\u2019s marathon meeting, Heastie said the investigation would address the allegations of groping, sexual harassment and other inapp<\/a>ropriate behavior against Cuomo, as well as the nursing home death toll from COVID-19 and a recent report that faulty bolts were used to build the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, which replaced the Tappan Zee Bridge.<\/p>\n

Assemblyman John McDonald III (D-Albany) expressed support for the plan and offered a harsh assessment of Cuomo\u2019s predicament, Yahoo! News said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got three major buckets of s\u2013t going on here,\u201d McDonald said.<\/p>\n

Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr. (I-Sag Harbor), who caucuses with the Democratic majority, also called Judiciary Chairman Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) \u201cwell-qualified to do this\u201d \u2014 before apparently joking about the potential consequences.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will not be starting his car in the morning, but I think he\u2019s the right guy for the job,\u201d Thiele said.<\/p>\n

Heastie spokesman Mike Whyland didn\u2019t deny the accuracy of the report, saying, \u201cThe Speaker stands by what he said 100 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n

But a source close to Heastie said the speaker held a terse, two-minute video conference call after the report was posted online and told the Democratic conference it would no longer meet that way again due to the leak.<\/p>\n

Heastie said he would instead only hold virtual meetings with smaller groups until lawmakers can again gather in person after the coronavirus pandemic is under control, the source said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
