Yaphet Kotto, a James Bond villain but real-life \u201chero,\u201d has died. He was 81.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Social<\/a>-media salutes and tributes are being made to the late \u201cLive and Let Die\u201d star, whose death was first announced by his wife, Tessie Sinahon, Monday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m saddened and still in shocked of the passing of my husband Yaphet of 24 years. He died last night around 10:30 pm Philippine time,\u201d Sinahon shared on Facebook<\/a>, captioning a picture of the Emmy-nominated actor smiling.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 You played a villain on some of your movies<\/a> but for me you\u2019re a real hero and to a lot of people also. A good man, a good father, a good husband and a decent human being, very rare to find. One of the best actor in Hollywood a Legend. Rest in Peace Honey, I\u2019m gonna miss you everyday, my best friend, my rock.\u201d<\/p>\n

So far, no further details about his cause of death have been released.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fans of the beloved Hollywood heavyweight, including director Ava DuVernay, are rushing to Twitter<\/a> with their condolences and fondest memories.<\/p>\n

A native of Harlem, Kotto was born on Nov. 15, 1939, a descendant of Cameroonian royalty on his father\u2019s side. But his early life was anything but luxurious. He was raised by his maternal grandparents in the Bronx after his parents split up and his mother joined the Army.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kotto\u2019s first feature film role in \u201cNothing But a Man,\u201d in 1964 at 23, would be the catalyst of an illustrious career complete with credits in Hollywood blockbusters like Ridley Scott\u2019s \u201cAlien,\u201d Paul Schrader\u2019s \u201cBlue Collar\u201d with Richard Pryor and \u201cThe Running Man\u201d opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Making history as the first black antagonist in the Bond franchise, Kotto served as a double threat to the late Sir Roger Moore as 007 in 1973\u2019s \u201cLive and Let Die.\u201d In the cinematic classic, Kotto assumed the villainous swagger of corrupt Caribbean dictator Dr. Kananga as well as his drug-pushing alter ego Mr. Big.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it was his compelling work as Lt. Al \u201cG\u201d Giardello on NBC\u2019s \u201cHomicide: Life on the Street\u201d that catapulted the 6-foot-3 acting powerhouse into household name status.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The popularity of the fast-paced police drama notwithstanding, Kotto admittedly grew to despise the series, which ran from 1993 to 1999. Upon the show\u2019s cancellation, owing to consistently low ratings, Kotto accused the writers of stunting his growth as a performer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI take pride in being part of the show \u2018Homicide.\u2019 But not that character. I was just a voicebox for the writers,\u201d Kotto lamented during an interview with\u00a0Feed Magazine<\/a>\u00a0in 1999, noting that all of his best acting scenes never made it to the air.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re all on the cutting room floor,\u201d he griped.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery moment that I worked for, that I thought was my finest acting, is on the floor. That really got to me. I broke down one night and just bawled like a baby after seeing the show. I had worked for one single moment, and it was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his eventual disdain for the TV project, Kotto went on to star in \u201cHomicide: The Movie\u201d in 2000. He most recently reprised his role as\u00a0technician Dennis Parker by lending his voice to the \u201cAlien: Isolation\u201d video game<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kotto was married three times. He and his last wife, Tessie Sinahon, tied the knot in 1998.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The couple lived together in the Philippines, where he died this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He is survived by his wife and six children.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
