At his TK News site, Matt Taibbi recalls<\/a> the cartoonish, everyone\u2019s-a-hero-or-villain nature of Soviet news<\/a>papers \u2014 and worries: Some US headlines \u201clately sound suspiciously like this kind of work,\u201d such as \u201cBiden\u2019s historic victory for America.\u201d A Washington Post column claimed Biden might be \u201cimpregnable to parody,\u201d which is \u201cbananas,\u201d Taibbi notes, since the prez \u201cchecks almost every box as a comic subject.\u201d Overall, \u201ccoverage of Biden increasingly resembles official press releases, often featuring embarrassing, Soviet-style contortions,\u201d even failing to show outrage when he declined \u201cto punish Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the murder\u201d of Jamal Khashoggi, after the same decision by President Donald Trump had media<\/a> \u201chowling in outrage.\u201d We\u2019re even seeing \u201cpurges of the politically unfit\u201d as most of the press \u201chas become homogenous\u201d and \u201cpredictably sycophantic.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Media Cover for Joe on Border<\/strong><\/p>\n

The media \u201care having an increasingly difficult time pretending that Joe Biden\u2019s rhetoric and policies had nothing to do with the surge of migrants arriving now,\u201d snarks National Review\u2019s Jim Geraghty<\/a>. With a record number of accompanied minors in federal custody, the press has rebranded \u201ckids in cages\u201d children \u201cin facilities similar to jail.\u201d And it treats the surge \u201cas just some strange and random thing that happ<\/a>ened, completely unconnected to,\u201d for example, Biden\u2019s promise of a pathway to citizenship for all illegal aliens. OK, some outlets blame \u201cpandemic-related economic deterioration\u201d in Central America; but then \u201cwhy didn\u2019t the surge we\u2019re seeing now occur much earlier in 2020?\u201d<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: Biden\u2019s Plan To Bring Back Welfare<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Biden\u2019s \u201cno-strings monthly checks to parents \u2014 whether or not they ever work\u201d \u2014 will reignite the \u201cfight over welfare,\u201d predicts Mickey Kaus at The Hill<\/a>. Biden\u2019s COVID bill mandates checks for a year, but Democrats will undoubtedly move to make the $100 billion program permanent. Though \u201cchecks go to middle-class parents as well as poor parents,\u201d they\u2019re still welfare, as they \u201csubsidize families without breadwinners.\u201d After 1996\u2019s welfare reform, \u201cpoor single moms went to work in historic numbers\u201d and welfare \u201crolls fell by half\u201d; by 2019, \u201cchild poverty was at record lows among all races.\u201d If welfare returns, we could see \u201cmillions of kids growing up fatherless in areas where the mainstream world of employment is a foreign country, for generation after generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Culture critic: Thomas Sowell\u2019s Brilliance<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cReading Thomas Sowell has this d\u00e9ja-vu quality,\u201d marvels Thomas Chatterton Williams at Law & Liberty<\/a>. With today\u2019s \u201cracial reckoning and pseudo-religious panic over identity, it is genuinely shocking to realize\u201d the 91-year-old economist \u201cnot only anticipated these same debates\u201d decades ago but \u201crefuted many of the positions now in ascendance.\u201d Last summer, many wondered why Black Lives Matter called itself Marxist and declared \u201ca \u2018disruptive\u2019 stance on the nuclear family.\u201d But as Sowell wrote a quarter-century ago, \u201cThe family is inherently an obstacle to schemes for central control of social processes,\u201d and \u201cthe preservation of the family\u201d is, as Williams puts it, \u201cfundamentally a source of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Centrist: America\u2019s Great Awokening<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Great Awokening is gathering speed,\u201d warns The Week\u2019s Damon Linker<\/a>. But where did \u201ccancel culture\u201d come from and where might it be going? It\u2019s a \u201csecular religion,\u201d with the word \u201cwoke\u201d itself \u201ca play on the Christian Great Awakenings that swept across\u201d America. The \u201cpolitical sensibility of the woke activists\u201d in \u201celite institutions of American culture\u201d connects \u201cto the old liberal Protestant mainline and from there all the way back to the officially sanctioned moral rectitude of Puritan New England.\u201d It\u2019s less \u201ca political movement\u201d than \u201ca call to individual moral purification,\u201d achieved \u201cthrough denunciation of sinners who are invited to confess and give public testimony of their transgressions.\u201d It reminds some critics \u201cof the \u2018struggle sessions\u2019 of China\u2019s Cultural Revolution,\u201d but the \u201csmaller-scale terror of the Salem witch trials is a more apt analogy.\u201d<\/p>\n
