\u201cCate Blanchett<\/strong> is going to play Donald Trump\u2019s sister, which is the weirdest sentence I have ever said,\u201d Ad Astra<\/i> director James Gray<\/strong>\u00a0recently said of his new movie Armageddon Time<\/em><\/strong>. To be fair, James Gray, it\u2019s one of the weirdest sentences we\u2019ve read.<\/p>\n

Early last year, it was announced that Blanchett was joining Gray\u2019s coming-of-age drama\u00a0Armageddon Time<\/em>, which draws inspiration from the filmmaker\u2019s own childhood in Queens. Donald Trump\u2019s sister,\u00a0Maryanne Trump Barry, seems like an unlikely figure to app<\/a>ear in a coming-of-age drama, but it seems like that\u2019s what\u2019s happening in\u00a0Armageddon Time<\/em>.<\/p>\n

At the Doha Film Institute\u2019s\u00a0Qumra\u00a0event this week (via\u00a0ScreenDaily<\/a>), Gray revealed who Cate Blanchett, one of several A-listers signed on to star in his upcoming film, will be playing. And it\u2019s none other than\u2026Donald Trump\u2019s sister, Maryanne Trump Barry:<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s only in it for three days, she\u2019s doing me a favor. She has a really long speech to deliver, it\u2019s a real scene-stealer. I\u2019ve tried to recreate the real speech as best I could from memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Written and directed by Gray, and produced by his\u00a0Ad Astra\u00a0<\/em>partner RT Features with the backing of Focus Features,\u00a0Armageddon Time<\/em>\u00a0is based on the filmmaker\u2019s own experiences as a student at the Kew-Forest School in Queens. And you know who Kew-Forest counts as one of its alumni? Donald Trump. The scene in which Blanchett stars involves\u00a0the former U.S. president\u2019s sister as she delivers\u00a0a speech to Gray and his fellow pupils. Blanchett\u2019s relatively small role is going to be a \u201cscene-stealer,\u201d according to Gray.<\/p>\n

While Blanchett is always a joy to watch onscreen, I almost wish she would stop playing characters we\u2019re designed to hate (see: anti-feminist activist\u00a0Phyllis Schlafly in\u00a0Mrs. America<\/em>), but they probably provide more meaty roles for the Oscar-winning actress. But what actually is a shame is that she\u2019s in the movie so briefly, despite being the first announced cast member of the star-studded film which includes\u00a0Anne Hathaway<\/strong>,\u00a0Robert De Niro<\/strong>,\u00a0Oscar Isaac<\/strong>, and\u00a0Donald Sutherland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There aren\u2019t details yet on who Hathaway, De Niro, Isaac, or Sutherland will be playing, and it may take some time for us to learn, as\u00a0Armageddon Time<\/em>\u2018s production start date has been on hold due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The delay is making Gray antsy, who added, \u201cI worry I have gotten stale because I haven\u2019t worked in a while. Creatively it has not been great when you try and create in the context of never leaving your house. It\u2019s like being under house arrest, maybe I should treat it like that because a lot of great people wrote great things from jail over the years.\u201d
