He was 89.<\/p>\n<p>Otsuka\u2019s incredible 50-year career in the anime industry \u2014 which started with the country\u2019s very first color animated feature\u00a0<em>Hakujaden<\/em>\u00a0(AKA\u00a0<em>The White Snake Enchantress <\/em>from 1958) \u2014 was paid tribute by Studio Ghibli producer\u00a0Toshio Suzuki, who announced his death Monday. The cause was a heart attack, his family have told Japanese <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>, per\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonbrew.com\/rip\/yasuo-otsuka-influential-japanese-animator-and-mentor-dies-at-89-203132.html\">Cartoon Brew<\/a>.<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->Otsuka came of age with Japan\u2019s young anime industry, joining Toei Doga (now Toei Animation), which aspired to establish itself as the Disney of the East, in 1956. At Toei, he would work as an animator on groundbreaking postwar productions such as\u00a0<em>Hakujaden<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Magic Boy<\/em>\u00a0(1959),\u00a0<em>The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon<\/em>\u00a0(1963), and the anti-Communist propaganda film\u00a0<em>The Bear and the Children<\/em>\u00a0(1960). Otsuka was trained by\u00a0Yasuji Mori, another legend of animation, and developed a style within Toei that was notably grounded and more full, in direct contrast with the limited style of popular TV anime at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Otsuka would use his experience to mentor famous\u00a0prot\u00e9g\u00e9s like\u00a0Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, who would go on to co-found Studio Ghibli. It would spark a long professional relationship between Otsuka and Studio Ghibli co-founders, with the animator collaborating on projects like\u00a0Takahata\u2019s feature directorial debut\u00a0<em>Hols: Prince of the Sun<\/em>\u00a0(1968) and\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>\u00a0<em>Lupin the Third Part I<\/em>\u00a0(1971\u201372), as well as its follow-up film, and Miyazaki\u2019s debut feature,\u00a0<em>Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Born on July 11, 1931 in Japan\u2019s Shimane prefecture, Otsuka\u2019s love of drawing was sparked by a fascination with trains, and then the military vehicles which frequented Japan\u2019s countryside in the aftermath World War II. Otsuka practiced drawing by sketching American trucks while reading comics left by occupying Allied soldiers. In 1956, Otsuka joined Toei and would help shape Japan\u2019s young animation industry. It was there that he met junior animators Miyazaki and Takahata, who impressed him with their talents, leading Otsuka to persuade the studio to let Takahata direct his first feature,\u00a0<em>Hols.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1968, Otsuka moved to A Production, where he was later joined by\u00a0Miyazaki and Takahata. There, the trio worked on such projects as the\u00a0<em>Lupin the Third Part I\u00a0<\/em>anime series, Takahata\u2019s\u00a0<em>Panda! Go, Panda!<\/em>\u00a0tv specials (1972 &amp; 1973), and\u00a0<em>Samurai Giants<\/em>\u00a0(1973\u201374), with Otsuka serving as animation director on all the titles. Otsuka continued to work with his longtime collaborators into the late \u201970s and \u201980s on projects like Miyazaki\u2019s\u00a0<em>Future Boy Conan<\/em>\u00a0(1979) and\u00a0<em>The Castle of Cagliostro<\/em>\u00a0(1979),\u00a0<em>Chie the Brat,<\/em> as well as the ill-fated Japanese-American co-production\u00a0<em>Little Nemo:\u00a0Adventures in Slumberland\u00a0<\/em>(1989). He also would continue to work on new\u00a0<em>Lupin<\/em> productions separately from Miyazaki and Takahata.<\/p>\n<p>In his later years, Otsuka became less active as an animator and turned to education instead, mentoring young talents at the\u00a0Toei Animation Research Institute and the Yoyogi Animation Academy. He has also written several books on the Japanese animation industry, with his book\u00a0<i><i lang=\"ja-Latn\" title=\"Hepburn transliteration\" xml:lang=\"ja-Latn\">Sakuga Asemamire<\/i><\/i>\u00a0(aka\u00a0<em>Sweating over Animation<\/em>)\u00a0considered \u201ca prime resource for the history of 1960s and 1970s anime.\u201d<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->But Studio Ghibli never forgot the animator that helped its two core co-founders kickstart their careers. In 2004, Ghibli released a documentary\u00a0<em>Yasuo Otsuka\u2019s Joy of Motion<\/em>\u00a0(2004) celebrating his career, while an exhibition of his art was held in Tokyo in 2002. Miyazaki has spoken frequently about his gratitude for Otsuka. \u201cFor me he is an excellent mentor,\u201d he wrote in his 1982 essay \u201cA \u2018Slanderous\u2019 Portrait.\u201d \u201cWe did some foolish things together, but we\u2019ve also talked passionately about the future of animation.
