This was not the case a couple of months ago when BTC peaked at $42,000 on Jan. 8 and subsequently dropped to the $30,000 level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-03\/b4683dc7-72be-4ab7-b730-034159312aab.png\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Bitcoin price, USD. Source: TradingView<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At that time, a 150% upside was needed from the $32,000 price on Jan. 26, and this seemed quite far-fetched. Therefore, the June $80,000 BTC call (buy) options traded at Deribit for $2,240, or 0.07 BTC. <\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-03\/c3d990d4-51cc-4dc5-81d2-52e199b9f22a.png\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>BTC $80,000 June call option, in BTC. Source: Deribit<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Less than two months later, as BTC reached $61,700 on March 13, the same call option peaked at BTC 0.15, or $9,255. That&#8217;s a 3x gain in less than seven weeks. Keep in mind that despite the 93% rally to $61,700, an additional 30% upside was needed to reach the $80,000 strike. <\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-03\/e51c8762-5b99-46a7-9064-ce8257fde8a8.png\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>BTC June call option market. That call option price has also increased due to the BTC volatility change as sellers will request a more substantial premium for taking the risk during uncertain markets.<\/p>\n<p>Intense price swings, regardless of the direction, will push volatility higher, and unexpected <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> from major <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> outlets usually drives the indicator up.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-03\/8682dfaf-f690-4979-a4c9-cad651a448f7.png\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Bitcoin 60-day options historical volatility. Even if the BTC price had stayed the same, the option price would have climbed accordingly.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Options_probabilities_should_not_be_taken_literally\"><\/span>Options probabilities should not be taken literally<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Options pricing is also heavily dependent on how distant the expiry date is. The same $80,000 call might be deemed worthless two days ahead of maturity.
