“#Demon Slayer Mugen Train US Theaters Debut Set \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The battle of the highest-grossing movie in Japan was once fought between critically acclaimed titans of anime<\/a> \u2014 Hayao Miyazaki\u2019s Oscar-winning\u00a0Spirited Away<\/em> kept the title for years before being temporarily toppled by Makoto Shinkai\u2019s sensational\u00a0Your Name<\/em>. But in 2020, another anime film obliterated Japanese box office records,\u00a0becoming the highest-grossing movie in the country, and becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2020 (just outgrossing\u00a0Tenet<\/em>) even amid a global pandemic. It\u2019s an anime film with a mouthful of a title and not much of a bearing to regular U.S. moviegoers:\u00a0Demon Slayer \u2013 Kimetsu No Yaiba \u2013 The Movie: Mugen Train<\/em><\/strong>. And now, it\u2019s coming to U.S. theaters.<\/p>\n

Aniplex of America and Funimation announced that they are teaming up for the North American release of\u00a0Demon Slayer: Mugen Train<\/em>, which is officially set to open in U.S. theaters on April 23<\/strong>.
\nDirected by\u00a0Haruo Sotozaki<\/strong>,\u00a0Demon Slayer: Mugen Train<\/em> is a sequel to the ongoing anime series<\/a> which\u00a0adapts the popular manga series by\u00a0Koyoharu Gotouge<\/strong>\u00a0which\u00a0follows a young boy named Tanjiro who joins an elite group of demon slayers in order to find a cure for his sister after she is turned into a demon. The\u00a0Demon Slayer<\/em> anime debuted in 2019 and was an instant hit, praised for its sleek animation by\u00a0studio ufotable.<\/p>\n

The film acts as a bridge between the first and upcoming second season of\u00a0Demon Slayer<\/em>, which perhaps explains its sensational box office success: breaking the\u00a0the $100 million milestone in Japan in just 10 days, and grossing nearly $400 million in the country alone, beating out Hayao Miyazaki\u2019s\u00a0Spirited Away\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Titanic\u00a0<\/em>for the\u00a0<\/em>all-time record.\u00a0 That\u2019s the best reason I can give for its success (I can\u2019t imagine regular Japanese moviegoers who\u00a0aren\u2019t<\/em> fans of the anime flocking to buy tickets for the R-rated flick). And though it might irk me a little that an all-time classic like\u00a0Spirited Away\u00a0<\/em>has been surpassed by a big-budget chapter in a popular ongoing anime, it doesn\u2019t seem to be bothering Miyazaki, who in hilariously typical fashion,\u00a0couldn\u2019t care less<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train<\/em> will be shown in both\u00a04DX and IMAX, and both subtitled and English dubbed versions. According to Aniplex and Funimation, those interested in watching\u00a0Mugen Train<\/em>\u00a0at home will have to wait until June 22, when digital purchase and rentals will be distributed on Amazon, App<\/a>le TV, Google Play, the Microsoft Store, Vudu, and the PlayStation Store.\u00a0Pre-orders start April 26.<\/p>\n

Season 1 of\u00a0Demon Slayer<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is available to stream on Netflix, so there\u2019s still time to catch up before the film hits theaters on April 23, 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
