Good lord, Ridley Scott<\/strong>, can you chill? Scott, who is 83-years-old, just wrapp<\/a>ed filming\u00a0The Last Duel<\/em>\u00a0and is already deep into shooting his next movie\u00a0House of Gucci<\/em>. You\u2019d think he might want to take a breather, but no \u2013 he\u2019s already planning his next feature film\u00a0Kitbag<\/em>, and is attached to produce a whole slew of titles. And now he\u2019s gone ahead and added one more to the list:\u00a0Roads to Freedom<\/em><\/strong>, a 10-episode World War II epic that he\u2019s making with writer Steven Knight<\/strong>. Scott will direct the first episode and also executive produce the series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Deadline has the scoop on\u00a0Roads to Freedom<\/em>, calling it a \u201c10-episode epic that will tell the story of World War II from several international perspectives.\u201d The series will be based on a series of books by\u00a0Antony Beevor, with a script by Beevor and Steven Knight, who is responsible for great stuff like\u00a0Locke<\/em> and questionable stuff like\u00a0Serenity <\/em>(the \u201cMatthew McConaughey is a character in a fishing video game<\/a>!\u201d movie). Here\u2019s a synopsis:<\/p>\n

The intention is to tell the story using fresh and unique perspectives. While most Hollywood war films have focused on the American and British effort,\u00a0Roads to Freedom<\/em>\u00a0will portray the brutal realities from multiple viewpoints, with characters not only from the U.S. and UK but also from Russia, Germany, France and other countries across the globe. That includes women, and children struggling to survive. The emphasis is on humanity, the characters bound together by one dramatic story. Some of the story lines will be discomforting, but heroic, and the race between East and West to capture Berlin will shed light on what became the foundations of the Cold War.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Knight and Beevor will write all episodes while Scott plans to direct the premiere. Scott and Knight will also executive produce,\u00a0 and the series was created and\u00a0developed by executive producers\u00a0PJ van Sandwijk\u00a0and\u00a0Michael Lesslie\u00a0through Storyteller Productions. David W. Zucker and Marina Brackenbury will also executive produce. The Beevor books being drawn on here appear to be\u00a0D-Day \u2013 The Battle for Normandy, Paris After the Liberation, Arnhem \u2013 The Battle for the Bridges, Ardennes 1944 \u2013 Hitler\u2019s Last Gamble, Berlin \u2013 The Downfall 1945, A Writer at War \u2013 Vasily Grossman with the Red Army<\/em>, and\u00a0The Second World War<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As I mentioned above, Scott is a busy man, so it\u2019s unclear when and how he\u2019s going to fit\u00a0Roads to Freedom<\/em> in, but the Deadline reports that the project is a \u201cmajor priority\u201d for the filmmaker.<\/p>\n
