Ryan Watkins, a senior research analyst at crypto analysis firm Messari, has speculated that Ethereum could overtake Bitcoin as the largest crypto asset once its Eth2 and Proof-of-Stake overhaul is complete.<\/p>\n

App<\/a>earing on Youtube<\/a> show ‘FinTech Today’ on March 18, Watkins noted<\/a> that while he does not know \u201cif or when\u201d Ethereum will flip Bitcoin, he does believe Ether could emerge as the leading crypto asset in the future, due to Eth2, stating:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe selling point of Bitcoin over Ethereum as a store of value asset boils down its monetary policy being very predictable and the Bitcoin blockchain being very secure. I think that with the shift to Eth2 and to Proof-of-Stake, […] Ethereum may actually potentially be more secure than Bitcoin.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Watkins also emphasized Ether\u2019s changing underlying economics amid the Eth2 transition, highlighting expectations that Ethereum\u2019s forthcoming burn mechanism will result in Ether being destroyed at a rate exceeding the creation of new supply.<\/p>\n

Ethereum\u2019s monetary policy will actually change in Eth2 so that it actually won\u2019t just be just be less inflationary than Bitcoin, it would actually be deflationary. So then, every year, there is actually less and less Ether in existence because it’s being burnt.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He posted the question: \u201cIf Ethereum is more secure and it [has] a stronger monetary policy, well then what is the bull case for Bitcoin in this scenario?\u201d<\/p>\n

Watkins also noted the \u201cmassive\u201d and \u201cdiverse\u201d economy being built on Ethereum, suggesting the network\u2019s booming decentralized application sector will attract new users at a greater pace than Bitcoin over time.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt a certain point, the economy of Ethereum begins to attract so much capital, both human capital and financial capital, that it is actually a force in the global economy,” he said. The GDP of Ethereum is actually rivaling many large countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople can earn livings in this economy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

According to Blockchain Center\u2019s \u201cFlippening Index<\/a>,\u201d which uses eight metrics to measure Ethereum\u2019s strength relative to Bitcoin, Ethereum is currently 65.6% as strong as Bitcoin \u2014 having retraced from an all-time high of 72.3% in early February.<\/p>\n

The index suggests Ethereum has already overtaken Bitcoin by node count, transaction count, and total transaction fees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
