Texas Attorney General<\/a> Ken Paxton announced Tuesday he will enact a $29 million electric bill forgiveness plan for Texans who were gouged by surging energy prices during last month\u2019s historic winter storm.<\/p>\n

According to the Paxton\u2019s office, Griddy Energy LLC, debited their customers \u201cenormous amounts.\u201d <\/p>\n

The energy company, which also filed for bankruptcy on Monday, issued a statement<\/a> saying the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) was to blame for the outages. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe actions of ERCOT destroyed our business and caused financial harm to our customers,\u201d Griddy Chief Executive Officer\u00a0Michael Fallquist said. <\/p>\n

\u201cERCOT made a bad situation worse for our customers by continuing to set prices at $9,000 per megawatt hour-long after firm load shed instructions had stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paxton\u2019s office also issued a statement<\/a> saying they are working with Griddy to make sure customers are forgiven after suing the company under the Texas\u00a0Deceptive Trade Practices\u00a0Act. <\/p>\n

\u201cI ensured that Griddy\u2019s\u00a0proposed bankruptcy plan takes an important step forward by offering releases to app<\/a>roximately 24,000 former customers who owe $29.1 million in unpaid electric bills,\u201d the statement read. <\/p>\n

\u201cGriddy\u00a0and my office are engaged in ongoing good faith negotiations to attempt to address additional relief for those\u00a0Griddy\u00a0customers who have already paid their storm-related energy bills.\u201d<\/p>\n

Griddy Energy was in even more trouble last month when ERCOT banned the company from taking part in the state\u2019s energy market due to the company\u2019s practice of surge pricing \u2014 even during the middle of a catastrophe.<\/p>\n

Paxton\u2019s office and Griddy Energy have not offered any timeline for when customers can expect the reimbursement.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
