CNN is accused of pushing \u201cclickbait conspiracy theories\u201d with its deep dive into whether Abraham Lincoln was a racist \u2014 and concluding that the answer is \u201ccomplicated.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lengthy \u201canalysis\u201d\u00a0was published Sunday<\/a>\u00a0under the headline \u201cDid Black lives matter to Abraham Lincoln? It\u2019s complicated\u201d and penned by enterprise reporter John Blake.<\/p>\n

It delves into the 16th president\u2019s \u201ccomplex and evolving\u201d legacy, noting that in recent years, Honest Abe\u2019s perception of black and Native Americans has been called into question.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf some of Lincoln\u2019s public utterances about Blacks were retweeted today, he would have been canceled on social media<\/a> and likely run out of office,\u201d Blake writes\u00a0in the article, which coincides with a six-part podcast series<\/a> on Lincoln\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n

The piece was bashed by political satirist Tim Young, who accused the network of trying to save its dwindling viewership since President Donald Trump left office by finding \u201ca new boogeyman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCNN is officially jumping the shark with this new take that Lincoln was a racist \u2014 which is the final nail in the coffin for them being able to call themselves a news<\/a> organization \u2014 now they\u2019re just clickbait conspiracy theories,\u201d Young told Fox News<\/a>. \u201cAnything for a buck, including calling the president who ended slavery racist. Way to prove why no one should ever believe a thing that\u2019s ever on your network.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blake\u2019s piece examines \u201cwhy some say Lincoln was a racist\u201d \u2014 noting that the president who abolished slavery in 1863 \u201cused the N-word and told racist jokes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut in some circles, \u2018Honest Abe\u2019 is increasingly becoming Racist Abe,\u201d Blake writes.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe once said that Black people were inferior to Whites and he liked minstrel shows. He proposed ending slavery by shipping willing Black people back to Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n

Statues of Lincoln have been toppled or removed in cities including Portland and Boston, while the San Francisco school board recently voted to scrub Lincoln\u2019s name from a school over his treatment of Natives before backtracking, the article notes.<\/p>\n

But the article also offers views on why Lincoln wasn\u2019t a racist, noting that he was the first commander-in-chief to invite black people to the White House and his friendship with abolitionist Frederick Douglass.<\/p>\n

One leading historian on Lincoln and the Civil War told Blake he\u2019s never described the former president as a \u201cracist\u201d but said he did share \u201csome of the prejudices of his time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWas Lincoln an anti-racist? No, not really,\u201d Eric Foner says in the piece. \u201cWas he an egalitarian in the modern sense? No. Race was not a major concern of Lincoln. He didn\u2019t think about race very much. To ask if he\u2019s a racist is the wrong question. And if you ask the wrong question, you\u2019re going to get the wrong answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dan Gainor, vice president of Media Research Center, also blasted CNN\u2019s piece for forgetting that Lincoln\u2019s \u201cNo. 1 job was ensuring [the country] stayed united\u201d through the Civil War.<\/p>\n
