“#Hydroxychloroquine can help save hospitalized coronavirus patients, study finds<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A new study has found that the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine helped COVID-19 patients better survive in the hospital.<\/p>\n

A team at Henry Ford Health System in Southeast Michigan said Thursday that a study of 2,541 hospitalized patients found that those given the drug were far less likely to die, CNN reported.<\/p>\n

Dr. Marcus Zervos, the system\u2019s division head of infectious disease, said 26 percent of those not given hydroxychloroquine died, compared to 13 percent who got the drug.<\/p>\n

\u201cOverall crude mortality rates were 18.1 percent in the entire cohort, 13.5 percent in the hydroxychloroquine alone group, 20.1 percent among those receiving hydroxychloroquine\u2009plus\u2009azithromycin, 22.4 percent among the azithromycin alone group, and 26.4 percent for neither drug,\u201d the team wrote in a report published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases.<\/p>\n

The study came a little more than two weeks after the Food and Drug Administration yanked its emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for the coronavirus in hospitals, citing a lack of evidence it worked and that the risks outweighed any potential benefits.<\/p>\n

The agency said the drug, along with a similar version called chloroquine, which is normally prescribed to treat malaria and some forms of severe arthritis, was \u201cunlikely to be effective in treating COVID-19,\u201d according to a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditionally, in light of ongoing serious cardiac adverse events and other serious side effects, the known and potential benefits of CQ and HCQ no longer outweigh the known and potential risks for the authorized use,\u201d the FDA said.<\/p>\n

The FDA authorized the emergency use of the drugs in March, and President Trump has touted the drug \u2014 which he said he himself took as a preventive measure with no side effects.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t complain about it,\u201d he said after the FDA\u2019s move, which did not prevent doctors from prescribing it for individual patients. \u201cIt certainly didn\u2019t hurt me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Researchers not involved in the new research said it wasn\u2019t as sound as others studies showing hydroxychloroquine did not help patients, and said other treatments, such as the use of the steroid dexamethasone, might have accounted for the better survival rate, according to CNN.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur results do differ from some other studies,\u201d Zervos told a news<\/a> conference. \u201cWhat we think was important in ours \u2026 is that patients were treated early. For hydroxychloroquine to have a benefit, it needs to begin before the patients begin to suffer some of the severe immune reactions that patients can have with Covid,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The Henry Ford team also monitored patients carefully for heart problems, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe combination of hydroxychloroquine\u2009plus\u2009azithromycin was reserved for selected patients with severe COVID-19 and with minimal cardiac risk factors,\u201d the team wrote.<\/p>\n

The researchers said their findings showed that hydroxychloroquine could be potentially useful as a treatment for coronavirus, which has killed nearly 130,000 Americans to date, according to Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to note that in the right settings, this potentially could be a lifesaver for patients,\u201d Dr. Steven Kalkanis, CEO of the Henry Ford Medical Group, said at the news conference.<\/p>\n

Researchers not involved with the study said that the Henry Ford team did not randomly treat patients but selected them for different treatments based on each individual\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the Henry Ford Health System became more experienced in treating patients with COVID-19, survival may have improved, regardless of the use of specific therapies,\u201d Dr. Todd Lee of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Canada, and colleagues wrote in the same medical journal.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
