Facebook<\/a> is developing a version of Instagram for kids under the age of 13 \u2014 the latest attempt by the tech giant to get their products into the hands of a new generation.<\/p>\n

The new offering was announced internally to Facebook employees Thursday, Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n

Instagram was acquired by Facebook for $ 1 billion almost a decade ago and since then become one of the world\u2019s most popular social media networks. <\/p>\n

\u201cIncreasingly kids are asking their parents if they can join apps that help them keep up with their friends,\u201d Facebook spokesman Joe Osborne tweeted <\/a>after news<\/a> of the company\u2019s venture <\/a>broke.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now there aren\u2019t many options for parents, so we\u2019re working on building additional products \u2014 like we did with Messenger Kids \u2014 that are suitable for kids, managed by parents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Messenger Kids \u2014 a partner product to Facebook Messenger \u2014 was released in 2017 as a way for parents to maintain greater control over who their child talks to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re exploring bringing a parent-controlled experience to Instagram to help kids keep up with their friends, discover new hobbies and interests, and more,\u201d Instagram later announced in a blog post.<\/p>\n

\u201cProtecting young people on Instagram is important to us. We want parents to have the information to help their teens have a safe and positive experience on Instagram.\u201d<\/p>\n

The news was greeted with negative reviews as some felt that the app would violate children\u2019s privacy and diminish the child\u2019s mental health. <\/p>\n
