Look for Ask Matt columns on many Tuesdays and Fridays.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"NCIS_Goes_Dark%E2%80%94And_to_the_Dogs\"><\/span><strong><em>NCIS<\/em> Goes Dark\u2014And to the Dogs<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Comment:<\/strong> I\u2019ve watched every <em>NCIS<\/em>-related show from their <em>JAG<\/em> origins. But this week\u2019s <em>NCIS<\/em> episode is my last. While I am surely onboard regarding the horror of animal cruelty, I do not watch this show to give myself nightmares. I don\u2019t know why the show has taken such a dark turn this year, but this is the last thing I needed after surviving 2020. Please remind the writers that the show is supposed to be \u201centertainment.\u201d But whatever, I\u2019m gone. \u2014 <em>Connie<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong> Why has <em>NCIS<\/em> decided to abruptly kill off a bunch of minor characters for no <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arent reason? It has given the show a weird vibe lately. \u2014 <em>Shaun<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt Roush:<\/strong> I addressed this recurring topic in a recent column, perhaps facetiously arguing that after a year like this, even an escapist action procedural like <em>NCIS<\/em> can\u2019t help but face some tragic realities. If the show had somehow endorsed or exploited animal cruelty, I\u2019d better understand Connie\u2019s reaction, but we all have our breaking point, and soon enough I imagine <em>NCIS<\/em> will go back to saving the world from terrorists and solving cases with their typical panache. But to Shaun\u2019s point that the characters of Breena (Jimmy\u2019s wife) and Emily (Fornell\u2019s daughter) died \u201cfor no apparent reason,\u201d I\u2019d argue that COVID-19 and addiction are valid concerns for any show to address, even if it does discomfit those who just wish to be entertained.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"And_What_About_Gibbs\"><\/span><strong>And What About Gibbs?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong> Tell me it ain\u2019t so about Gibbs. The show won\u2019t be the same. \u2014 <em>Phyllis, Riverview<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt Roush:<\/strong> For a longer explanation of why Phyllis is so concerned about Gibbs\u2019 suspension at the end of this week\u2019s episode, check out this article. The bottom line: As in the past, whenever <em>NCIS<\/em> was up for renewal, there\u2019s a ton of industry speculation on whether Mark Harmon will sign up for another season \u2014 this would be his 19<sup>th <\/sup>\u2014 and the latest story twist is fueling those concerns. I\u2019d advise just to keep watching and see how it plays out, both onscreen and off. (I\u2019ll repeat that this isn\u2019t a spoiler column and I don\u2019t know where the story is heading, and wouldn\u2019t spill even if I did.) This could be a bridge to the star eventually leaving, or reducing his presence in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, depending on how negotiations play out. But it\u2019s a pretty clumsy one. The last thing I\u2019d expect is for Gibbs to be written out of the series under a cloud. I also feel, like Phyllis, that <em>NCIS<\/em> won\u2019t be <em>NCIS<\/em> without its leader, and it\u2019s just as unthinkable the show would continue without him as it is to picture the even-longer-running <em>Law &amp; Order: SVU<\/em> without Olivia Benson.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_Bonnie_Such_a_Mean_Mom\"><\/span><strong>Why is Bonnie Such a Mean <em>Mom<\/em>?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong> I enjoy watching <em>Mom<\/em>, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s funny how Bonnie constantly puts down Wendy. It\u2019s seems like bullying. Why do the writers do that? And why the actors also accept that?? \u2014 <em>Eleanor<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt Roush:<\/strong> You\u2019ve got to have a thick skin to live in the world that <em>Mom<\/em> portrays, and while Bonnie\u2019s tongue is indeed wicked \u2014 and not just to Wendy, but also to Marjorie, her own mentor \u2014 Allison Janney plays this role so masterfully that you know these barbs come from a place of love \u2014 and damage. Beth Hall does a great job of shrugging off most of Bonnie\u2019s withering remarks \u2014 Wendy\u2019s a nurse, after all, and probably hears worse at work \u2014 and Mimi Kennedy is just as resilient as the more grounded Marjorie. (I\u2019m really going to miss these women!)<\/p>\n<p>In the bigger picture, what you\u2019re responding to is the style of hard jokes that comes off as insult humor, which is a specialty of Chuck Lorre\u2019s brand and not to all tastes \u2014 just remember the sort of invective that flew out of Sheldon\u2019s mouth on <em>The Big Bang Theory<\/em>. I\u2019ve always felt that Bonnie needed these metaphorical punching bags so she wouldn\u2019t destroy herself. You\u2019d think marrying Adam would soften her up, and to some degree it has, but a nicer Bonnie wouldn\u2019t be as funny.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Home_Family_Coming_Back\"><\/span><strong>Is <em>Home &amp; Family<\/em> Coming Back?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong> What happened to <em>Home &amp; Family<\/em> that was on every morning on the Hallmark Channel? Is it coming back? \u2014 <em>Roberta H, New York, NY<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt Roush:<\/strong> By now you\u2019re probably as tired as I am of this refrain, but COVID happened, forcing a production hiatus in January that apparently gave the producers an opportunity to rethink the series. According to a report on Deadline earlier this month, <em>Home &amp; Family<\/em> will go back into production the week of March 29 and return to air April 5 with a new format that includes airing three days a week (Monday-Wednesday) from the original five.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Looking_to_the_Skies_for_Answers\"><\/span><strong>Looking to the Skies for Answers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong> Whatever happened to <em>Big Sky<\/em>, and how are we supposed to remember what happened when they keep airing an episode, then going on hiatus? \u2014 <em>Laurel<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt Roush:<\/strong> Once again, welcome to the TV season of COVID, which has forced many shows to go to this unfortunate \u201chiatus\u201d model instead of airing straight through without interruptions. In the case of <em>Big Sky<\/em>, at least the break came at a turning point in the show, which resolved most aspects of the original kidnapping case, although psycho trucker Ronald Pergman (Brian Geraghty) is still on the loose \u2014 which tracks with the source material of C.J. Box\u2019s Cassie Dewell novels. When <em>Big Sky<\/em> returns, scheduled for April 13, it won\u2019t be that difficult to get back with the program, which will be introducing a bunch of new characters and presumably a new primary storyline.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_Defense_of_Greys_Firehouse_Spinoff\"><\/span><strong>In Defense of <em>Grey\u2019s<\/em> Firehouse Spinoff<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong> I agree that Andrew DeLuca\u2019s death on <em>Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> was excessive, while for a sporadic character I don\u2019t worry. But I don\u2019t understand the persistent criticism of <em>Station 19<\/em>, which is a beautiful series, dynamic, interesting, positive. It should be appreciated even just for the fact that you get out of the hospital and there is action. It allows us to see how first aid takes place, which always precedes medical intervention. It is normal that the two series often intertwine: Ben and Miranda are married, Carina and Maya are together, Robert is followed by Amelia and Webber. I certainly believe that <em>Station 19<\/em> has given some dynamism to <em>Grey\u2019s<\/em> world, which with the pandemic risked being too entrenched in the hospital corridors. What\u2019s the problem with seeing two series instead of one? A TV fan should just appreciate it, right? \u2013 <em>Sonia<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt Roush:<\/strong> Even TV fans have their limits, I\u2019m afraid, and while I appreciate your spirited defense of <em>Station 19<\/em>, and you make good points on how it differs from its hospital cousin, I do feel it\u2019s a terrible miscalculation for the two series to be so interconnected that they can\u2019t exist adequately on their own. Last week\u2019s two-part crossover culminating in DeLuca\u2019s death was an especially egregious example, and I\u2019m still getting mail from viewers who were rightfully upset that <em>Grey\u2019s<\/em> returned from its long hiatus right in the middle of DeLuca\u2019s medical emergency.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"And_Finally_%E2%80%A6\"><\/span><strong>And Finally \u2026<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On a personal note, I wanted to end this column with some happy <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>, so while we\u2019re soon heading into that time of series finales and uncertain fates of others, I\u2019m beyond thrilled that Syfy has given an early Season 2 renewal to one of my favorite shows so far in 2021: the hilarious and inventive sci-fi comedy <em>Resident Alien<\/em>.
