The 44th Japan Academy Awards were held tonight at the\u00a0Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa in Tokyo, announcing<\/span><\/a> the best works from Japanese (and international) films from 2020\u2013even if there weren’t\u00a0as many as usual. Among the awards given out was the\u00a0Japan Academy Film Prize for Animation of the Year, one of the most coveted awards of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 2020 award for\u00a0Japan Academy Film Prize for Animation of the Year<\/strong> went to Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train<\/em><\/strong>, which has become the biggest Japanese film of all-time both domestically, and soon-to-be internationally. Aniplex representative director\u00a0Atsuhiro Iwakami<\/strong> collected<\/span><\/a> the award at the ceremony, expressing his\u00a0“heartfelt gratitude to the anime<\/a> staff and everyone who brought the characters to life.”<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This makes Demon Slayer: Mugen Train<\/strong><\/em> the first franchise anime film to win the award, and the first anime that was adapted from a Weekly Shonen Jump property. Usually, franchise films, such as Evangelion<\/strong><\/em>, K-ON!<\/strong><\/em>, and One Piece<\/strong><\/em> have only been nominated and won the runner-up Excellent Animation of the Year.<\/p>\n

The winners of the\u00a0Excellent Animation of the Year for 2020 were\u00a0Violet Evergarden: The Movie<\/strong><\/em>, Poupelle of Chimney Town<\/strong><\/em>, Josee, The Tiger and The Fish<\/strong><\/em>, and Stand By Me Doraemon 2<\/strong><\/em>, which saw its previous film win the main award in 2015.<\/p>\n

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the\u00a0best opening weekend<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Japanese cinema history, becoming the\u00a0highest-grossing film<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Japanese theaters ever, and currently the\u00a0second highest-grossing anime film<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and Japanese film worldwide.\u00a0You can\u00a0read our review of the film here<\/span><\/a>. In North America, Mugen Train<\/strong><\/em> is scheduled<\/span><\/a> to make its stop on\u00a0April 23 both dubbed and subbed, with a digital release of the film on June 22.<\/p>\n

The Ufotable-produced anime film\u00a0continues to adapt\u00a0the manga series<\/a> by\u00a0Koyoharu Gotouge<\/strong>, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019.\u00a0The\u00a0Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired. The second season of the TV anime series, subtitled “Entertainment District arc”, will\u00a0premiere<\/span><\/a>\u00a0sometime in 2021 on Japanese TV.<\/p>\n
