“#Face\/Off Sequel Cast Bringing Back Travolta and Cage? \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

When word broke that Adam Wingard<\/strong> was directing a\u00a0Face\/Off<\/em> <\/strong>reboot, I\u2019ll admit I was immedia<\/a>tely skeptical. More than that \u2013 I was annoyed.\u00a0Face\/Off<\/em> is perfect as-is \u2013 we don\u2019t need a remake. Then things got weirder, as Wingard took to social media to clarify he wasn\u2019t making a reboot or a remake \u2013 he was making a\u00a0sequel<\/em>. This raised all sorts of new questions, specifically: how? How exactly do you make a sequel to\u00a0Face\/Off<\/em>? And do you bring back original stars\u00a0John Travolta<\/strong> and Nicolas Cage<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

According to Wingard\u2026maybe?<\/p>\n

Released in 1997,\u00a0Face\/Off<\/em> is John Woo\u2019s wonderful, operatic action flick in which mortal enemies John Travolta and Nicolas Cage end up undergoing surgery that literally swaps their faces (and bodies, too). It\u2019s an admittedly goofy concept, but Woo, Travolta, and Cage all make it work. It truly feels like a one-of-a-kind movie, and trying to remake it is a fool\u2019s errand. Thankfully, Adam Wingard is\u00a0not<\/em> trying to remake it \u2013 he and screenwriter Simon Barett<\/strong> are instead making a direct sequel. But what does that mean? Wingard has been dropping hints in several interviews as he promotes his upcoming movie\u00a0Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people just assume when I say that\u2026it just means it takes place in the world of Face\/Off<\/em>,\u201d Wingard told\u00a0Showbiz Cheat Sheet<\/a>. \u201cTo me, Face\/Off<\/em> isn\u2019t about a procedure or anything like that. It\u2019s not about the world that the characters exist in. It\u2019s about Sean Archer and it\u2019s about Castor Troy. That\u2019s what this movie is about. It\u2019s the continuation of that story. It\u2019s hard to talk about other than that but this is, to me, the definitive continuation of that saga.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll confess that even after Wingard revealed his\u00a0Face\/Off<\/em> was going to be a sequel I still thought he meant in the loosest of terms. I figured Wingard was making a movie about new characters who use the same face-swap surgery from the first film. But app<\/a>arently, I\u2019m dead wrong, and Wingard really does intend to somehow bring back the original characters from the first film \u2013 FBI Agent Sean Archer (Travolta) and terrorist Castor Troy (Cage). Of course, that\u2019s easier said than done, since Castor Troy died at the end of the original film. But what Adam Wingard presupposes is\u2026maybe he didn\u2019t?<\/p>\n

Speaking with Cinema Blend<\/a>, Wingard said: \u201cIsn\u2019t it weird, whenever you look at the end of that film, where\u2026 you know the part where John Travolta takes the ring off of Castor Troy? You remember that part? They\u2019re in the ambulance together. Well, did you notice that Castor Troy has a bandage \u2013 that the medic has bandaged his wound? Just take another look at that scene.\u201d For reference, here\u2019s the scene he\u2019s talking about.<\/p>\n

\nWingard\u2019s implication seems to be that paramedics wouldn\u2019t bother to bandage a dead body, so maybe Castor Troy is still alive, and I guess<\/em> that makes sense. Still,\u00a0it\u2019s worth noting that neither Travolta nor Cage has officially signed on to this film yet, and Wingard never comes right out and says, \u201cYes, Travolta and Cage are both in my movie!\u201d However, he\u2019s strongly hinting at bringing the actors back. Speaking with The Playlist<\/a>, Wingard compared the situation to his\u00a0Blair Witch<\/em> sequel:<\/p>\n

\u201cOur\u00a0Blair Witch<\/em>\u00a0movie\u2026we originally wanted to get [original Blair Witch Project<\/em> actress]\u00a0Heather Donahue\u00a0in it. And at the last minute, it turned out that she had zero interest in coming back and ever being associated with Blair Witch<\/em>\u00a0again. So we always felt like it never totally felt like a real sequel. And people didn\u2019t really accept it as a sequel. And I think that was a big lesson for us. And so when we came into Face\/Off<\/em>, we said, \u2018Look, I mean, like, the only way that we\u2019re going to do this really is if we get, you know, the original cast.\u2019 I\u2019m not going to say how it works or anything, but like, it\u2019s got to be 100% the real follow up not just like some fan service movie, not just some like ca-ching thing, this has to feel like the ultimate follow up to the original film.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I want to point out here that Wingard is very good at deflecting and hinting at stuff in these interviews while also not completely committing, and he leaves himself a lot of wiggle room in the event that Travolta and Cage don\u2019t<\/em> return. Which means\u00a0I still remain skeptical about this entire endeavor, but if Wingard does<\/em> manage to bring back Travolta and Cage, my interest in this project will increase tenfold. Hopefully, we\u2019ll learn what\u2019s really going on here soon.<\/p>\n
