Brittany Murphy<\/strong> broke out in a big way with her scene-stealing turn in\u00a0Clueless \u2013\u00a0<\/em>her second credited acting performance, but her first real speaking part. She had real screen presence and it felt like she was at the beginning of what would be a long, interesting career. Tragically, Murphy died only 14 years after her big break,\u00a0with her cause of death officially listed as pneumonia, at the way-too-young age of 32. Murphy\u2019s sudden, premature death led to several different conspiracy theories that have unfortunately overshadowed her life and career. Now, a two-part HBO Max documentary will explore Murphy\u2019s life \u2013 and will also attempt to tackle the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death.<\/p>\n

HBO Max has ordered a two-part Brittany Murphy documentary from\u00a0Blumhouse Television and Pyramid Productions, directed by Cynthia Hill<\/strong> (Private Violence<\/em>). The doc is described as \u201can in-depth, intimate character portrait exploring the life and career and mysterious circumstances surrounding the tragic death of \u201990s actress and rising star, Brittany Murphy. The series<\/a> will go beyond the conspiracy theories and headlines, featuring new interviews by those closest to Brittany and new archival footage.\u201d
\nMurphy technically made her feature debut with the 1993 film\u00a0Family Prayers<\/em>, but her role in that film was small and completely dialogue-free. It was 1995\u2019s\u00a0Clueless<\/em> that truly signaled her arrival, with Murphy playing the goofy, endearing\u00a0Tai \u2013 a performance that immedia<\/a>tely caught everyone\u2019s attention. Murphy would go on to app<\/a>ear in many more films, but her career came to a tragic end when she died at the age of 32. Her official cause of death was listed as pneumonia, but there have been a wealth of controversies and conspiracy theories surrounding her passing over the years. Those conspiracies were given even more fuel when Murphy\u2019s husband,\u00a0Simon Monjack<\/strong>, was found dead a year later at the same house Murphy died in.<\/p>\n

While this two-part doc is going to address those conspiracy theories, it doesn\u2019t look like it\u2019s taking a lurid, tabloid-like approach to the material, and will also devote more time to Murphy\u2019s actual life and career. As director Cynthia Hill said in a statement: \u201cI agreed to do this film because I think it\u2019s a shame that Brittany\u2019s promising life and career has been eclipsed by the circumstances of her death. I think it\u2019s important to celebrate Brittany\u2019s talent as we struggle to explain the tragic circumstances of her and Simon\u2019s deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n

We thought her story warrants a deeper exploration, and examination into the environment that allowed her to become a victim of success.
