A federal app<\/a>eals judge accused the media of being a \u201ctrumpet\u201d for the Democratic Party in a scathing dissenting opinion handed down Friday.<\/p>\n

Washington, DC, Senior Circuit Judge\u00a0Laurence Silberman, 85, called on his fellow judges to overturn a Supreme Court landmark decision protecting the press, complaining that conservatives are oppressed by liberal outlets, academia and tech companies that combine to create \u201ca frighteningly orthodox media culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

The judge\u00a0was countering his colleagues\u2019 decision to toss a libel suit<\/a> filed by two\u00a0former Liberian officials against human rights group Global Witness.<\/p>\n

The ex-officials had sued over a report by a human rights group called Global Witness <\/a>that they said implied they had accepted bribes from an oil company.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Silberman complained in his lone, dissenting opinion about the 1964 New York Times v. Sullivan<\/em> decision requiring libel plaintiffs prove \u201cactual malice,\u201d and called on\u00a0the Supreme Court to revisit the landmark\u00a0ruling.<\/p>\n

The Reagan appointee said increasing the power of the media is \u201cso dangerous,\u201d \u201cbecause we are very close to one-party control of these institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo of the three most influential papers (at least historically), The New York Times and The Washington Post, are virtually Democratic Party broadsheets,\u201d Silberman claimed.<\/p>\n

He also griped that the news<\/a> section of The Wall Street Journal and most television outlets also skew to the left.<\/p>\n

Silberman said a \u201cone-party control of the press\u201d poses a threat to a \u201cviable democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He cited Fox News, The New York Post and The Wall Street Journal opinion and editorial pages as one of the\u00a0\u201cfew notable exceptions to\u00a0Democratic Party ideological control.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
