Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a> \u201cBuilding forward better: Towards a resilient and green Africa to achieve the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063\u201d and to promote the economic, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>Amina Mohammed, deputy secretary-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> of the United Nations, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/en\/2021\/dsgsm1548.doc.htm\">pointed out<\/a> that developing a just, fair economic model that embraces green and renewable energy, resilient infrastructure, and digitalization \u2014 while protecting natural resources by broadening partnerships for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> and innovation \u2014 could unleash the region\u2019s green potential and fuel economic transformation. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"UNECAs_digital_agenda\"><\/span>UNECA\u2019s digital agenda<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to a paper titled \u201cHarnessing Emerging Technologies: the cases of Artificial Intelligence and Nanotechnology,\u201d which was provided by Victor Konde \u2014 scientific affairs officer at the United Nations: \u201cThe global pandemic caused by [COVID-19] has highlighted the importance of technology and innovation in developed countries. [&#8230;] Digital technologies have transformed how people work, interact and access services.\u201d It also highlights the \u201cinterest in the role of emerging technologies in driving Africa\u2019s transformation\u201d and in achieving the UN\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As the document states, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, or UNECA, conducted profound policy research and \u201cprovided policy advice to member States on several emerging technologies, such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and nanotechnology.\u201d The paper continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe digital economy is unpinned by several key technologies, some of which include artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality, and augmented reality. However, as UNCTAD noted, China and United States currently own 75% of patents on blockchain, account for half of global spending on IoT and their firms accounts for three quarters of the global market of commercial cloud computing. As a result, China and the United States account for 90% of the 70 largest digital platforms while Africa and Latin America account for a combined share of about one percent (1%).\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The internet and tech giants, such as Google and Facebook, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-11\/africa-news-facebook-fb-google-goog-free-internet-derailed-in-africa?cmpid=BBD031221_AFRICA&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=210312&amp;utm_campaign=africa\">spend<\/a> billions of dollars in an attempt to get more people online in Africa despite a backlash from governments that are trying to shut down access to these services. At the same time, Vera Songwe, UN under-secretary-general and executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uneca.org\/stories\/un-forum-unveils-the-wonders-of-artificial-intelligence-and-other-stis-for-africa\">pointed out<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAfrica could expand its economy by a staggering $1.5 trillion dollars, by capturing just 10% of the speedily growing artificial intelligence (AI) market, set to reach $15.7 trillion by 2030.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Digital_currencies_in_Africa\"><\/span>Digital currencies in Africa<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Africa is the second-largest continent in the world in terms of both territory and population (roughly 1.3 billion <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/world-population\/africa-population\/\">people<\/a>), and cryptocurrency is in big demand for the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Countries\u2019 national fiat currencies are vulnerable to double-digit <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/africarenewal\/magazine\/april-2018-july-2018\/africa-could-be-next-frontier-cryptocurrency\">hyperinflation<\/a>, according to the UN.<\/li>\n<li>Africa has a high unbanked population, a high penetration of smartphone use and an increasingly young, migrating population.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During 2020, monthly cryptocurrency transfers under $10,000 in value to and from Africa \u2014 often traded person-to-person across the 816 million mobile <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/mobileeconomy\/sub-saharan-africa\/\">phones<\/a> in Sub-Saharan Africa alone \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/africas-quiet-cryptocurrency-revolution\/a-55199637\">skyrocketed<\/a> 55%, \u201creaching a peak of $316 million in June.\u201d They traded with a large margin that reached up to 70% due to the small number of cryptocurrency retailers. Individual citizens and small businesses located in Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya accounted for most of this trading activity.<\/p>\n<p>China is the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2227-7099\/8\/3\/53\/htm\">largest<\/a> trading partner of many African countries. It has been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unctad.org\/news\/investment-flows-africa-set-drop-25-40-2020\">investing<\/a> ($45 billion in 2019, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) since the mid-2000s into Africa\u2019s technology, communications and finance infrastructure, and blockchain technology education. Already, Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda and Eswatini have been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cbdctracker.org\">researching<\/a> central bank digital currencies, or CBDCs. As a BRICS nation, South Africa is piloting one as part of Russia\u2019s multinational digital currency initiative that will be linked with China\u2019s mobile Digital Currency Electronic Payment system <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theafricareport.com\/65139\/china-africa-the-growing-battlefield-for-digital-dominance\/\">supported<\/a> by its Blockchain-based Service Network.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Not like before: Digital currencies debut amid COVID-19<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nigeria_is_the_worlds_second-largest_BTC_market\"><\/span>Nigeria is the world\u2019s second-largest BTC market<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In its \u201cNigeria Digital Economy Diagnostic Report\u201d of 2019, the World Bank <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/documents.worldbank.org\/en\/publication\/documents-reports\/documentdetail\/387871574812599817\/nigeria-digital-economy-diagnostic-report\">laid out<\/a> the country\u2019s digital economy potential. Only a year later, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigeria surpassed China and currently ranks second in the world in Bitcoin (BTC) trading, even though it lacks the regulatory framework to support the digital asset business activity.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin trading provides a source of income for an increasing number of unemployed young people in addition to a means of sending and receiving cross-border payments. For example, BTC funded the 2020 #EndSARS protests against police brutality, which were carried out by young people nationwide and spread beyond Nigerian borders, parallel to solidarity protests in different parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the Central Bank of Nigeria banned banks from servicing crypto exchanges and is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbn.gov.ng\/Out\/2021\/CCD\/naira4dollar.pdf\">incentivizing<\/a> citizens until May 8 to use licensed international money transfer operators for cross-border payments. Nigeria\u2019s securities regulator followed suit by suspending its planned regulatory framework for digital assets. This ban is expected to be in place until a well-devised concrete regulatory framework for the $1.8 trillion cryptocurrency market is developed, perhaps one that incorporates the Nigerian Technology Industry Group\u2019s core policy <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisdaylive.com\/index.php\/2021\/03\/11\/stakeholders-canvass-policies-to-regulate-cryptocurrency\/\">suggestions<\/a> of instituting Know Your Customer, Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism regulations. As the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/202103060054.html\">explained<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are going to digitalise our processes and we are going to create a new full-pledged directorate of intelligence to enable us gather intelligence so that we will be proactive in our fight against economic and financial crimes and by so doing we will also provide the government with necessary quality advice that will lead to good governance.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>South African president steps down as banks embrace blockchain technology<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_solar_energy_potential_of_Africa\"><\/span>The solar energy potential of Africa<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Africa has abundant energy <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/africarenewal\/magazine\/january-2021\/push-renewables-how-africa-building-different-energy-pathway\">resources<\/a>, including solar energy, as it receives more hours of bright sunshine during the course of the year than any other continent. But it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uneca.org\/sites\/default\/files\/TCND\/ARFSD2021\/Exhibition\/A6.3.3f%20-%20The%20SDG7%20Initiative%20for%20Africa%20-%20Accelerating%20clean%20energy%20investments%20for%20access%20and%20climate%20ambition.pdf\">lacks<\/a> reliable access to modern energy, which is needed for digitalization.<\/p>\n<p>The continent is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mercomindia.com\/africa-on-track-transition-to-solar\/\">determined<\/a> to green-energize and solarize its digitalization, as it is most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, even though it contributes minimally to CO2 emissions. With the exception of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/node\/61060\">Eritrea<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/node\/61101\">Libya<\/a>, African countries have ratified the Paris Agreement with ambitious nationally determined contributions.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/africarenewal\/magazine\/january-2021\/push-renewables-how-africa-building-different-energy-pathway\">forecasts<\/a> by the International Renewable Energy Agency, \u201cWith the right policies, regulation, governance and access to financial markets, sub-Saharan Africa could meet up to 67 per cent of its energy needs [from renewables] by 2030.\u201d And as pointed out by Songwe, it can \u201cprovide access to energy to over 70 per cent of Africans who are without access currently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Egypt is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/knowledge-product\/egypt-renewable-energy\">leading<\/a> regional efforts to transition to green\/solar energy, with the continent experiencing a surge of growth in new solar installations, mainly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/news\/africa\/nine-african-nations-on-track-to-join-solar-gigawatt-club--75642\">driven<\/a> by nine countries. In a first-of-its-kind project, Egypt recently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2021\/02\/egypt-china-local-manufacture-sand-solar-panels-energy.html#ixzz6otaY9bHd\">entered<\/a> into a joint venture with a Chinese company to locally manufacture sand-to-cell photovoltaic solar panels, with China having <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/green-bri.org\/china-belt-and-road-initiative-bri-investment-report-2020\/\">ramped up<\/a> its overseas green investment to 57% under the Belt and Road Initiative, according to research from the International Institute of Green Finance.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The national lockdowns and international <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> bans imposed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have accelerated green digitalization efforts across African markets, which have promoted democracy and cryptocurrencies and broken down geographic barriers to collaboration and distribution. Nigerian songwriter and singer Burna Boy, with his music, and Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo, with his paintings, conquered the world during 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, the UN has dedicated the whole year of 2021 to the creative economy, as it plays a critical role in promoting sustainable development for a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. A sustainable green recovery plan necessitates understanding the links between climate change, health and inequality, and it requires implementing ambitious climate change policies that align with the Paris Agreement. More important than ever, these goals provide a critical framework for a green COVID-19 recovery.
