With the NFL draft app<\/a>roaching next month, Post columnist Steve Serby caught up with Alabama receiver Jaylen Waddle for some Q&A.<\/em><\/p>\n

Q: I\u2019m an NFL GM: Tell me why I should draft Jaylen Waddle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I think I\u2019m just different, I\u2019m versatile, you can put me anywhere \u2014 outside, inside, special teams, punt returner, kick returner. And if it\u2019s a play that could be made, I believe I can make it. Every team needs a guy like that. That\u2019s what makes me, me, and that\u2019s what makes me different.<\/p>\n

Q: What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I want to have a legendary career. I want people to remember me as just electric and just something that they\u2019ve never seen before, a guy that could make any play, and make a lot of plays in a lot of different ways.<\/p>\n

Q: How many times have you been to New York?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I went once.<\/p>\n

Q: How long ago was that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: That was like when I was like in middle school.<\/p>\n

Q: What was the purpose of the trip<\/a>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: We had a basketball tournament out there.<\/p>\n

Q: How would you feel about playing on the big New York stage?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: It would be great. \u2026 I think anywhere I land, it\u2019ll be great. I think it would be fun.<\/p>\n

Q: You like the spotlight?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Definitely. I don\u2019t really believe in, like, pressure, or anything like that. But I think it\u2019s a nice place to play.<\/p>\n

Q: What do you know about the New York Giants?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Besides the regular, my sister was a Giants fan when we were growing up.<\/p>\n

Q: Why was your sister a Giants fan growing up in Houston?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: She liked Eli Manning.<\/p>\n

Q: What did you think of Eli?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I was definitely a fan of Eli, too.<\/p>\n

Q: How much do you enjoy the return game<\/a>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I enjoy it a lot. You bring a spark any type of a way to the team.<\/p>\n

Q: How is your ankle?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Everything\u2019s going good, my training\u2019s going well.<\/p>\n

Q: Describe your emotions when you fractured your ankle in October, and what was your low point emotionally while you couldn\u2019t play?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Just really disappointed. I wanted to be there for my teammates.<\/p>\n

Q: What was your reaction when NFL players and others urged you not to play anymore and risk further injury?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I didn\u2019t hear all that until days later. That was part of my decision-making process.<\/p>\n

Q: How did Hurricane Harvey affect you and your family?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Lucky for us, Harvey didn\u2019t hit our area too hard. It was really devastating for so many people around us. A few family members had to vacate their houses but nothing major.<\/p>\n

Q: How was your family affected by the winter storm? Did they lose power?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: My mom lost power for a few hours. My dad lost power for a few days. We were very fortunate in that situation too.<\/p>\n

Q: Describe your on-field mentality.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Determined \u2026 physical.<\/p>\n

Q: Aren\u2019t you a little bit small to be physical?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Nah, not at all. You learn fast at Alabama you\u2019re gonna be physical.<\/p>\n

Q: What drives you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Just want to be better than the guy I\u2019m lined up against.<\/p>\n

Q: If you could test your skills against any cornerback in NFL history, who would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: It\u2019s gonna have to be Deion [Sanders], of course.<\/p>\n

Q: If you could pick the brain of any receiver in NFL history, who would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Jerry Rice.<\/p>\n

Q: Who are wide receivers you\u2019ve liked watching?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Of course I watched my Alabama family tree with Julio [Jones] Calvin [Ridley], Amari Cooper, Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs. I also like Tyreek Hill, Cooper Kupp, guys kind of built like me.<\/p>\n

Q: What impresses you about Tyreek Hill?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Definitely his play speed, but I see more than just him playing fast. He\u2019s very like physical and he\u2019s more than just running around and just getting open.<\/p>\n

Q: Are defenders surprised at how fast you play?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: It\u2019s pretty much expected, but I think they\u2019ll be a little surprised.<\/p>\n

Q: Who was your boyhood idol?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Chad Johnson, LaDainian Tomlinson.<\/p>\n

Q: Why Chad Johnson?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: He was just different \u2026 personality.<\/p>\n

Q: How does his personality compare to yours?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Very different (laugh). I guess that\u2019s why he stood out to me, I guess.<\/p>\n

Q: Who are athletes in other sports you admire?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I\u2019m a LeBron [James] fanatic. LeBron\u2019s my guy. I\u2019m a big basketball guy.<\/p>\n

Q: Were you a point guard in high school?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Yes sir, you know it!<\/p>\n

Q: Who did you pattern your game after?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: My favorite player of all time is Allen Iverson.<\/p>\n

Q: Coach Nick Saban wouldn\u2019t let you play basketball, I guess.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Nah, he was being selfish, he wanted me all to himself.<\/p>\n

Q: What do you think about the Nets with Kyrie Irving, James Harden and Kevin Durant?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I think it\u2019s a little unfair, but my Lakers are gonna get to \u2019em, for sure. I don\u2019t know about my Rockets, but my Lakers, I got faith in \u2019em.<\/p>\n

Q: Are you hopeful that Deshaun Watson and the Texans can patch things up?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I\u2019m hopeful that they do. I think they will.<\/p>\n

Q: Describe Coach Saban.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Definitely like old school, kind of like grandparent kind of vibe \u2026 real like my way-or-the-highway (chuckle) type of deal. He\u2019s got a little sense of humor to him once in a while. But very structured and discipline-based.<\/p>\n

Q: What makes him a Hall of Fame coach?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Really like never satisfied.<\/p>\n

Q: What is the best play you made at Alabama?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Probably when we played Georgia. It was third down and we were down by a touchdown in the [2018] SEC Championship, the play breaks down, and it\u2019s a scramble into the sideline, and then toe tap, and I\u2019m gonna say the next play we end up scoring.<\/p>\n

Q: How many positions did you play in high school?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I played running back, receiver, cornerback, I played quarterback one day. Our quarterback had a concussion, so he was out for a game, so we were pretty much in like Wildcat.<\/p>\n

Q: Did you throw a touchdown pass?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I did! I threw two, to be exact.<\/p>\n

Q: You also liked playing defense, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Yes. I\u2019m a real natural-like corner by heart. That\u2019s another thing Coach Saban didn\u2019t want to let me do.<\/p>\n

Q: Describe Alabama quarterback Mac Jones.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: He handled everything like a pro. Natural leader.<\/p>\n

Q: Give me an example of his leadership and what is he like in the huddle?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: He was a lead-by-example type of guy. Gave us whatever we needed. Never complained about anything we were doing. Level headed and confident.<\/p>\n

Q: Running back Najee Harris?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Kind of the same, real hard worker, real professional, great teammate. He\u2019s just self-driven and never really satisfied.<\/p>\n

Q: Cornerback Patrick Surtain II?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: He has long arms, good feet, and I think that\u2019s gonna translate well when he goes to the NFL.<\/p>\n

Q: How are you and DeVonta Smith different style-wise as receivers?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I\u2019m versatile, inside\/outside kind of player. Make plays in space and make people miss. He has a different body type. He\u2019s more of an outside receiver, but a great talent.<\/p>\n

Q: Any corners you\u2019re looking forward to going up against in the NFL?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: Defintely Patrick Surtain.<\/p>\n

Q: Three dinner guests?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: LeBron, Jerry Rice, Barack Obama.<\/p>\n

Q: Favorite movie?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: \u201cRemember the Titans.\u201d<\/p>\n

A: Johnny Depp.<\/p>\n

A: Zoe Saldana.<\/p>\n

A: Lil Wayne.<\/p>\n

Q: What kind of impact do you think you can make as a rookie?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A: I think I can bring something different to the team as far as playmaking ability \u2026 take the top off \u2026 a guy that you can put anywhere and can look forward to making some type of plays.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
