{"id":207537,"date":"2021-03-21T17:55:47","date_gmt":"2021-03-21T14:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/julia-letlow-wins-northeast-louisiana-based-house-seat\/"},"modified":"2021-03-21T17:55:47","modified_gmt":"2021-03-21T14:55:47","slug":"julia-letlow-wins-northeast-louisiana-based-house-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/julia-letlow-wins-northeast-louisiana-based-house-seat\/","title":{"rendered":"#Julia Letlow wins northeast Louisiana-based House seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Julia Letlow wins northeast Louisiana-based House seat<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>BATON ROUGE, La.  \u2014 Republican Julia Letlow easily won a Saturday special election for the northeast Louisiana-based U.S. House seat that her husband, Luke, couldn\u2019t fill because of\u00a0his death from complications\u00a0related to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>With the victory, Julia Letlow becomes the third woman ever elected to the U.S. House from Louisiana, the first Republican woman elected to Congress from the state and the only woman among its current congressional delegation.<\/p>\n<p>She trounced 11 other contenders to capture the 5th District seat in the primary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an incredible moment, and it is truly hard to put into words. What was born out of the terrible tragedy of losing my husband, Luke, has become my mission in his honor to carry the torch and serve the good people of Louisiana\u2019s 5th District,\u201d Julia Letlow said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Farther south, the race to fill a second vacant congressional seat for Louisiana was headed to an April 24 runoff, but the seat was certain to stay in Democratic hands.<\/p>\n<p>Two Democratic state senators from New Orleans \u2014 Troy Carter and Karen Carter Peterson \u2014 secured spots in the runoff after leading the field among 15 candidates. The New Orleans-based 2nd District seat is open because Democrat Cedric Richmond\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-cedric-richmond-louisiana-new-orleans-8b790419b26b47dda7d617f8430e0b25\">took a job<\/a>\u00a0as a special adviser to President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>In Louisiana, all candidates regardless of party compete against each other in the primary. If no candidate tops 50% of the vote, a runoff election is held between the top two vote-getters.<\/p>\n<p>Julia Letlow ran in her deep red district with the backing of former President Donald Trump, the endorsement of the state GOP and more money raised than all her competitors combined. She talked of supporting agriculture in the largely rural district, expanding broadband internet access and supporting conservative values.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. John Bel Edwards offered congratulations to Julia Letlow on what he said must be a proud but bittersweet day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has continued to exemplify strength, determination and tenacity in the wake of a terrible tragedy. I know that these same characteristics that got her through the last few months will make her an excellent advocate for Louisiana in Washington,\u201d the Democratic governor said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Luke Letlow died on Dec. 29, only days before he was scheduled to be sworn into office. His wife announced her candidacy in January, a move that sidelined other high-profile Republicans who had expressed interest in the seat.<\/p>\n<p>Julia Letlow raised more than $680,000 for the race, according to data filed with the Federal Election Commission. Her closest fundraising competitor and the race\u2019s second-place finisher, Democrat Sandra \u201cCandy\u201d Christophe, brought in $75,000. Christophe is a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> worker from Alexandria who also ran unsuccessfully against Luke Letlow.<\/p>\n<p>The 5th District covers all or part of 24 parishes, including the cities of Alexandria and Monroe.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2nd District, Carter received Richmond\u2019s backing and ended the primary as the top vote-getter in the majority minority district that extends along the Mississippi River into Baton Rouge.<\/p>\n<p>Peterson squeaked into the runoff, narrowly edging out Gary Chambers Jr., a Baton Rouge community activist and local publisher who raised less money and focused heavily on social media outreach. If Peterson wins, she\u2019d be the first Black woman elected to Congress from Louisiana.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"State Sen. He finished a distant fourth.<\/p>\n<p>The major Democratic contenders had few differences on policy, backing progressive causes such as increasing the federal minimum wage, expanding access to federally financed health care and supporting \u201cenvironmental justice\u201d for poor communities facing greater health risks from pollution.<\/p>\n<p>With Carter and Peterson atop the polls and the highest fundraisers, they largely battled each other. Carter accused Peterson of crafting education legislation to benefit her husband\u2019s career, an allegation the Peterson campaign called offensive and deceptive. They traded criticism about missed votes in the Legislature.
