“#City councilman wants to ban NYPD from using ‘weaponized robots’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

He doesn\u2019t want Robocops joining the NYPD. <\/p>\n

A new city council bill would ban Big App<\/a>le cops from using \u201cweaponized\u201d robots.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bill says that you can\u2019t weaponize robots in a way that can harm people,\u201d Councilman Ben Kallos (D-Manhattan), who told introduced the legislation last week, told The Post on Sunday. \u201cIt\u2019s one thing to use a robot to defuse a bomb, but it\u2019s another thing to weaponize a robot for interacting with people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police \u201cuse guns when their life is in jeopardy and that is all,\u201d Kallos argued. \u201cIf there\u2019s a robot involved, there\u2019s no human life to protect and therefore it doesn\u2019t need to be weaponized in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is no evidence that New York City has purchased or considered purchasing armed robots \u2014 but Kallos believes the NYPD\u2019s recent use of an unarmed \u201cDigidog\u201d to sniff out a Bronx home invasion could foreshadow future incursions into robo-policing.<\/p>\n

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also ripped the cyber canine at the time, who argued the money spent on such gadgets could be put to better use. <\/p>\n

The NYPD has not disclosed the cost of each \u201cDigidog,\u201d Kallos said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are already\u00a0concerned about militarizing police, and this is stopping them before they get any further,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe passed a bill back in the city council that they were supposed to disclose that they were using these robots, and they didn\u2019t. So who knows what\u2019s\u00a0in store?\u201d<\/p>\n

He is also exploring ways to limit NYPD use of aerial drones, which are regulated on the federal level.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether it\u2019s robots or drones, we need to move away from overpolicing communities and get back to the basics of investing in people and giving people the resources they need,\u201d Kallos said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last thing that low income communities of color is a robot or drone patrolling them. Lord knows how many school seats we could pay for with the cost of one of these.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bill is co-sponsored by Bronx Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson.<\/p>\n

Experts told Wired, which first reported the proposal<\/a>, that Kallos is right to be concerned.<\/p>\n

\u201cNonlethal robots could very well morph into lethal ones,\u201d\u00a0said Prof. Patrick Lin of California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. <\/p>\n

\u201cRobots can save police lives, and that\u2019s a good thing. But we also need to be careful it doesn\u2019t make a police force more violent.\u201d<\/p>\n

An NYPD rep told Wired that the department \u201chas been using robots since the 1970s to save lives in hostage situations and hazmat incidents.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Digidog \u201cis being tested to evaluate its capabilities against other models in use by our Emergency Service Unit and Bomb Squad,\u201d the rep said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
