It evokes the vitality of an ever-widening America, celebrates its storied past and \u2014 most important \u2014 evokes its limitless future potential.<\/p>\n<p>It hails the pioneering forebears who beat \u201ca thoroughfare of freedom .\u2009.\u2009. across the wilderness\u201d and pays tribute to the nation\u2019s defenders in war, the brave \u201cheroes .\u2009.\u2009. who more than self their country loved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More: It looks forward to a day when America\u2019s \u201calabaster cities\u201d finally will \u201cgleam undimmed by human tears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song has always stirred deep emotion. \u201cI can\u2019t read the lines without swallowing hard,\u201d one early reader wrote Bates. Voices quavered as crowds solemnly sang the song outside the White House in 1941 after Pearl Harbor and, six decades later, at Ground Zero after 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>In 1979, Pope John Paul II recited its fervent prayer \u2014 \u201cAmerica, America, God shed his grace on thee\u201d \u2014 as he descended from his plane on his first <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to this country.<\/p>\n<p>The many memorable recordings and renditions \u2014 from Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, Mariah Carey and others \u2014 all share a moving simplicity, without the vocal acrobatics that too often accompany \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The music plays a large part in the song\u2019s mystique. Samuel Howe, a church organist, composed it during an 1882 ferry ride from Coney Island to his home in Newark \u2014 for an entirely different hymn. It was attached to Bates\u2019 words in 1904 after his death.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s certainly the day to fully appreciate this magnificent tribute to America and all that it represents.
