Stick-on, wash-off styles these are not \u2014 the artists use real tattoo guns to plunge ink into their customers\u2019 bodies.<\/p>\n<p>The only difference is the studio\u2019s patented, \u201cmade-to-fade\u201d product, which lasts in the skin for somewhere between nine to 15 months. The founders say that they\u2019re hoping to attract a slew of first-time clients to the world of tattooing, from the body-modification-curious to people, like themselves, who come from conservative backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile there is a time and place for permanence \u2026 there are millions of people who, like [us], wouldn\u2019t engage [with tattooing} because of that,\u201d Ephemeral\u2019s co-founder Josh Sakhai told The Post.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"Jeff Liu (left) and Josh Sakhai (right) show off their recently done Ephemeral tattoos. As a college freshman at NYU, he decided to rebel and get one anyway \u2014 but he quickly changed his mind, afraid to commit to a design forever.<\/p>\n<p>Now, he has seven Ephemeral tattoos. \u201cIt\u2019s unleashed the ability that I have to tell my story, my values, on my own body through this artform,\u201d Sakhai said.<\/p>\n<p>Sakhai\u2019s co-founders \u2014 Brennal Pierre, 42, Vandan Shah, 33, and even CEO Jeff Liu, 33 \u2014 all come from similar backgrounds, having grown up in traditional immigrant households.<\/p>\n<p>The team \u2014 none of whom are tattoo artists \u2014 spent more than six years developing their proprietary ink, testing out more than 50 formulations to find one that faded in an aesthetically pleasing way. Small, accessory-style \u201csubtle\u201d designs range in price from $175 to $225; moderately sized \u201cstatement\u201d pieces, such as a bicep tattoo, cost $350 to $450. <\/p>\n<p>Experienced tattoo artist Marissa Boulay said she notices a difference in how the ink performs, but it\u2019s \u201cvery minor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt [works] better when you go at a slower pace than traditional tattoos,\u201d said Boulay, 29.<\/p>\n<p>The black ink also can\u2019t fade to grayscale for shading \u2014 the artists stipple and cross-hatch as an alternative \u2014 and the freshly tattooed ink shows up slightly less saturated. <\/p>\n<p>Boulay said she loves being able to offer tattoos to people who aren\u2019t ready for the real thing. \u201cMaybe when they get one of these, it\u2019ll even open the doors to permanent tattoos down the line,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>But for some, this new ink is a sign that some of the tattoo world\u2019s most deeply held values are \u2026 disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s totally against what tattoos stand for: the permanence, the commitment, the rebellious [spirit],\u201d said Michael Bellamy, 54, the owner of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redrockettattoo.com\/\">Red Rocket Tattoo<\/a> in Manhattan. \u201cEveryone in my age group is going to laugh at this and say it\u2019s not for strong people.
