Hold on, what\u2019s that vile,\u00a0musty, and inescapable smell? Shhh, friend, don\u2019t concern yourself with that, it\u2019s just the latest issue of\u00a0Plugged In<\/em>.<\/p>\n

We all have enemies. And if you say you don\u2019t, then you either haven\u2019t thought about it hard enough, or you\u2019re a dirty liar. Me? I have loads. A veritable adversarial smorgasbord. But, today, I\u2019m here to talk about just one: mold.<\/p>\n

Yes, friends, I\u2019m at war with\u00a0<\/span>fungus<\/span>.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t my first time throwing hands with multicellular filaments, far from it in fact. I\u2019ve lived in plenty of places overrun by my fusty foe, you name a location, and I can answer \u201cmold\u201d after it all night.<\/p>\n

But\u2026 this particular case is different, different enough to make me want to put some sunglasses on and say\u00a0\u201cit\u2019s personal\u201d in a low voice because it\u2019s both different and personal \u2014\u00a0because it\u2019s app<\/a>eared in the apartment I\u00a0<\/span>own<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Just like any landowner worth their salt, let me slip this silken robe from my shoulders and paint you a word picture of the situation.<\/p>\n

The mold only appears in one place: the bedroom. In there exists a wall. It is approximately 3 meters long, 90% of which is covered by windows. Underneath the sill is radiator that runs its entire length.<\/p>\n

To put it another way, we\u2019ve just ridden the wet bus into condensation city.<\/p>\n

For a long old while, I didn\u2019t notice anything amiss. But, before you can say \u201cDON\u2019T OPEN THAT GIANT HORSE, TROJANS, ONLY SOMEONE MENTAL WOULD SEND A GIFT LIKE THAT. IN FACT, WHOSE DECISION WAS IT TO BRING IT IN HERE!?!\u201d there were two corners where my\u00a0<\/span>fungal\u00a0nemesis<\/span> (nemeses?) had set up shop.<\/p>\n

I tried to vanquish it using good, old-fashioned elbow grease (AKA rubbing and spraying), but it always came rocketing back without a care in the world. Proof, if you needed it, that \u201cgood, old-fashioned\u201d is simply another way of saying \u201cshit and a waste of your time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thankfully, I turned to something that has never let me down: the concept of gadgetry. I bought a dehumidifier.\u00a0<\/span>This<\/em>\u00a0dehumidifier<\/span>:<\/p>\n

<\/a>Unfortunately, the dehumidifier doesn\u2019t produce colorful air, or little floating leaves.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Because we\u2019re all busy, I\u2019m not going to explain how\u00a0dehumidifiers work \u2014 mainly because I don\u2019t really know. I\u2019d take a stab at some sort of dark magic<\/a>?<\/p>\n

Nor am I going to discuss the actual unit I have in any detail (I have to put a sock over it at night because some brain genius covered it in bright green LEDs), but I will say this: I would kill for my dehumidifier. Honestly, try and take it out of my house and see what happens.<\/p>\n

Since the dehumidifier arrived, the\u00a0<\/span>fungus\u00a0<\/span>hasn\u2019t dared show its spotty face in my house \u2014 it has\u00a0kicked the mold\u2019s disgusting derri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n

And, pals, I cannot tell you how good this feels. I have conquered the mold, trounced its spore advances, and sent it back to the mushroom-y hell from whence it came. They say the enemy of your enemy is your friend, but this feels more than that. The dehumidifier is family now \u2014 and I would die for it.<\/p>\n

Proof, once and for all, that any and every problem can \u2014 and probably should \u2014 be solved with a very specific gadget. Now let\u2019s see if consumerism can defeat my next enemy: depression.<\/p>\n
