Hawkeye<\/em><\/strong> may not even be in the can yet, but Marvel may already have a spin-off series in their sights. A\u00a0Hawkeye<\/em> spin-off series centered on Echo<\/strong>, a deaf Native American superhero with the power to copy another person\u2019s movements or fighting style, is reportedly in early development at Disney+.<\/p>\n

Variety<\/a> reports that Disney+ is in the early stages of development for a\u00a0Hawkeye\u00a0<\/em>spin-off series about Echo, who will be played in the upcoming Marvel series by Native American actress\u00a0Alaqua Cox<\/strong>. Etan and Emily Cohen<\/strong> have been set to write and executive produce this Echo-centric series, with a writers\u2019 room being assembled. Marvel Studios will produce.
\nIn Marvel Comics, Echo \u2014 real name Maya Lopez \u2014 is a frequent supporting character of Daredevil who\u00a0possesses \u201cphotographic reflexes,\u201d or the uncanny ability to perfectly copy other people\u2019s movements. She\u2019s also crossed paths with Moon Knight and the Avengers, but her connection with Hawkeye lies in a shared pseudonym: she was the first person to hold the title of Ronin before passing it on to Clint Barton, AKA Hawkeye. We see\u00a0Jeremy Renner<\/strong>\u2018s Clint Barton assume the name of Ronin at the beginning of\u00a0Avengers: Endgame<\/a><\/em>, after having lost his family in the Blip and gone rogue from the Avengers in a bloody mission of revenge.<\/p>\n

Cox is set to make her on-screen debut in\u00a0Hawkeye<\/em>. Also set to app<\/a>ear in the series are Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh (reprising her role from Black Widow<\/em>), Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, and of course, Hailee Steinfeld<\/strong> as Kate Bishop, Hawkeye\u2019s protege. But even if it\u2019s her first role, Cox must have impressed Disney+ and Marvel for them to begin development on an Echo series before\u00a0Hawkeye<\/em> has even finished production.<\/p>\n

The series, which picks up after the events of\u00a0Avengers: Endgame<\/em>, is\u00a0written and executive produced by Jonathan Igla<\/strong> and loosely inspired by Matt Fraction and David Aja\u2019s terrific\u00a0Hawkeye<\/em> comic series. But based on how the cast is filling out and how this series will supposedly introduce the origins of characters like Echo \u2014\u00a0McClarnon plays William Lopez, Echo\u2019s father, for example \u2014 it seems unlikely that the Marvel show will be the sweet and irreverent dramedy that Fraction\u2019s comics were. It appears that the series will dive into Clint\u2019s dark days as Ronin and trace his connections to Cox\u2019s Echo and others. And perhaps, considering Clint Barton\u2019s brief stint as a major deaf Marvel character, explore disability in the Marvel world with both Hawkeye and Echo.<\/p>\n

But the least surprising thing about\u00a0Hawkye<\/em> is that, like\u00a0many a Disney+ show, it\u2019s already acting as a launch pad for other world-expanding properties.<\/p>\n

Representatives for Marvel Studios and the Cohens did not comment on Variety\u2019s report.
