In 2021, this celebrity guest judge on \u201cJeopardy!\u201d was called \u201ca slap in the face to all involved\u201d by a former contestant of the show.<\/p>\n

What is Dr. Mehmet Oz?<\/p>\n

\u201cJeopardy!\u201d has enlisted a star-studded cast of substitute hosts including Katie Couric<\/a>, Mayim Bialik and Aaron Rodgers to play quizmaster following the passing in November<\/a> of legendary host Alex Trebek, who had helmed the beloved game<\/a> show since 1984.<\/p>\n

But the recent announcement that celebrity M.D. Dr. Oz would be taking over the fact-based game show this week has got fans questioning whether \u201cJeopardy!\u201d producers have lost their way. <\/p>\n

In an open letter published on Medium.com<\/a> last month, a consortium of former \u201cJeopardy!\u201d winners and contestants urged the show to rethink the decision, alleging that casting the \u201cdubious\u201d doc in the role would celebrate \u201cthe elevation of \u2026 talking head[s] at the expense of academic rigor and consensus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reps for Oz have not responded to The Post\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we heard that Dr. Mehmet Oz was slated to be a guest host, agreement came quickly \u2014 we were opposed,\u201d they began in their letter, published Feb. 24. \u201cDr. Oz stands in opposition to everything that Jeopardy! stands for.\u201d<\/p>\n

The essay cites a number of instances in which Dr. Oz, who began his career as a guest medical expert on the Oprah Winfrey Show, was publicly decried for his un-researched and potentially \u201cdangerous\u201d claims. <\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout his nearly two decades on television he has used his authority as a doctor to push harmful ideas onto the American public, in stark contrast with his oath to first do no harm. These ideas include promoting supplements that do nothing, legitimizing gay conversion therapy (which is banned in California, as well as 19 other states), dangerous \u2018cures\u2019 for autism, and, most recently, the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of these things is backed by any scientific fact and by promoting them he is actively putting his viewers in danger,\u201d they added. The authors also referenced a 2014 letter penned by Columbia Media<\/a>l School faculty, where Dr. Oz also teaches, calling for his removal from the program. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 is known for being incredibly rigorous; a well-deserved reputation,\u201d they concluded. \u201cTo then invite Dr. Oz to guest-host is a slap in the face to all involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans have since taken to social media to echo the letter\u2019s assertions<\/a>, citing a 2014 study<\/a> that found \u201chalf\u201d of all Dr. Oz\u2019s medical advice to be \u201cbaseless and wrong.\u201d\n <\/div>\n
